Because they continually voted in politicians that pushed for more and more spending on everything from Social Security (and other social welfare) and additional benefits. Deficits continued to grow, even in peace time. This was basically throwing more and more gasoline on the spreading fire.
They then took advantage of these said programs (who wouldn't?) and indebted future generations and made them slaves to continual economic growth and age demographics. With decreasing population rates and aging population (people live longer and retire), you have a younger population expected to pay into an unsustainable system to support them. You have strain on the younger populations as a result. Economic growth isn't large enough to overcome this and is rather stagnant. Thus you have a worsening burden on the younger populations. The low population rates eventually have led to the mass importation of cheaper labor to help prop up the stagnation.
Eventually you get to the point where you can barely manage to pay off the interest on the debt (eg. Japan) and something is going to give.
