Youtube has historically always operated at a loss, they only recently posted a profit, and that came after massive restructuring to their adsense policies. Namely they totally slashed how much they payout by a factor of 10. Thats how youtube became barely profitable.
Their business model is data mining, and serving ads. They can only serve ads if the advertiser finds the content on the platform palatable. You're never going to have billions of dollars flow in to a platform that supports the right, so the notion of "the free market" creating a peer alternative is total fucking fantasy.
