Translating is basically all about asking yourself the question "How can I butcher this work in the least destructive way?". You're always going to butcher it, but if you work really hard you can maybe produce something that's 70% of the original product. If you're a lazy cunt, you'll get 20% out.

Once I started learning Japanese, even with just rudimentary knowledge, I began noticing translation errors in pretty much everything.
Follow the guide on Sup Forumsjp/ that got kicked off this board because the mod threw a hissy fit about people not downloading his repacks anymore.

This is actually why I don't get bothered anymore by shit translations for pretty much anything that isn't English. No matter how good the translator is, I'm still going to be missing out on smaller details left out in the process. As long as I get the general gist of the plot and dialogue, I'm good.
That being said, I still intend to learn Japanese soon. More and more of the series I'm following are being dropped, so I don't have a choice. Plus. it'll be nice to go to Japan one day and check out all the obscure manga us EOPs aren't even aware of.

You really don't know how bad it is. Back when I was an EOP, I could excuse shit like nonsensical grammar, or completely losing track of which character was talking because the boxes weren't linked to them.
Now, I just avoid English as much as possible, especially in manga, where most "translators" are just pumping the text through OCR and making up lines. The other day I got mildly curious because someone posted a 4koma translation right after the original, and although the basic gist was carried over, you just lose so much fucking character. But hey, ignorance is bliss.
I didn't realise learning a language for something meant that you could only use it for that one thing. I better stop watching all those TV shows, playing all those games, and reading all that smut.

I've thought about how difficult it might get for me once I learn complicated medical terms. Then I realized that I don't even know those terms in English. Then I felt incredibly stupid.
Some of them are actually easier in Japanese, you see 肺 and you know "lung", you see "pulmonary" and maybe you skipped biology.

What amazes me is that instead of going to Japanese imageboards to use your newfound comprehension to discuss with good company or watching anime, playing vidya, and reading VNs raw, anyone who claims to be fluent in Japanese still comes back here to discuss with the masses of people that specifically watch subbed anime and discuss entirely in English.
I really only use Sup Forums to laugh at EOPs these days, the userbase is mostly children and you haven't been able to discuss shows here for the past 3 years.

Japanese is just a really rich language in expressing personality and relationships compared to English. I love reading romance novels/manga in Japanese for this reason. There are so many subtle ways of expressing emotion and affection in Japanese writing. In English maybe some of this would be conveyed through other means such as tone of voice and body language, but it doesn't come across in writing the way that it can in Japanese.

Memorising names isn't my point, being able to recognise basic styles is. You're not a film buff because you can name-drop someone vaguely arthouse like Jodorowsky, but you might be one if you can understand his influences and influencers.
You can't get this shit from a wikipedia page, you have to formulate your own opinions, and that's a hell of a lot more difficult when you can't read a single name to connect the dots with.
