Anime Critique

How can someone learn to be more critical of the anime they watch? What do you consider a redflag in a series? What things do common viewers overlook that they shouldn't?

...

Why do you want to be more critical? I can think of a few reasons, but a lot of "critical" people are just fussy and joyless.

Go ask ANN. Maybe they can refer you to the surgeon that permanently lodged the stick up their asses.

I'd like to grow my tastes and recognize what's "bad" in anime that might not be obvious to most people. Things like direction, animation etc, for example.

So you want to force yourself to stop liking certain things that you currently enjoy.

But how would that help you? It just means you'll enjoy fewer things.
Hating things isn't smarter than liking them, you know.

You can start by watching at least 700 shows (TV only) minimum. Anything less than that and your opinion is worth jack shit. Until then, see yourself out.

No? I just want to be more aware.

I'd find it interesting. I'm using the knowledge I already have to watch certain shows and I'm not realizing bad parts of shows.
>Hating things isn't smarter than liking them, you know.
I'm not claiming that either.

Do the "cute girl" test.

>Does the show have cute girls?
>If yes, pretend they don't exist/replace them with something you're not attracted to. If the show is still good, then it's good.
>If no, the show is bad.

Also, the "self insert" test is good too
>Are you finding yourself self inserting into a character?
>If yes, don't do that. If you still care about the show and enjoy it, you're golden.
>If no, the show isn't good and you're just using it as a vessel to fantasize

I don't see why being more aware of mistakes would be interesting. If you don't notice a flaw it won't detract from your enjoyment. If you do, it will. That sounds like a bad thing to me.

I don't want to mindlessly watch a show all the time. Sometimes I want to notice flaws so I can know that the show isn't worth my time.

Just watch more anime.
I can't even watch decent shows anymore.

If you're enjoying watching it then it's worth your time. "Bad" shows don't do you any harm.

Just make up buzzwords and call everything moeshit if it has girls, fujoshit if it has men, idolshit if it's about idols, LNshit if it's adapted from an LN, and 'insert demographic here'shit for manga adaptations.

Think of it this way. I want to recognize why a character is good beyond "they're cool" or "they're badass". I want to understand what makes a good character. Same for plot etc.

You won't learn that by asking Sup Forums. You learn that with experience.

Is that a fidget spinner?

Yes.

Shows that I like = good
Shows that I don't like = bad

Feel free to make a thread any time about a show and I'll let you know if it's good or bad so you can post it on mal.

Okay, that's different. Learning to appreciate what makes things good is a better motivation than learning to dismiss things that are bad.
Try focusing on things you like and thinking about why you like them. And read about why other people like them.

This. However if you want to see some examples of good critics of anime (they aren't perfect, mind you) then watch Animesnob, Bennet the Sage, Super Eyepatch Wolf, and Digibro.

Aside from criticism, I want to appreciate more anime. Old me wouldn't have like Blade Runner 2049, but current me that understands more about film was able to appreciate more than just the story and characters.

I'll do that user, thanks.

Already watch SEP and Digi, but will check out the other two.

I can see why some shows are popular and appreciate their good points, but it doesn't mean I'll like them. Doesn't make them bad though.

nigger it's fucking entertainment, if you like something watch it if you don't then don't, what kind of beta pussy goes to listen what some random fatass is saying about some shows
"oh I've been enjoying this show but kingnigger420 said it was moeshit so now I'm not allowed to enjoy it anymore"
holy fuck grow up

You know I don't always agree with these people, right? I do have my own opinions. For example, I might recognize that SAO is garbage, but I'll still play the game coming out.

Also, I want to appreciate shows more as well.

do you speak japanese? if you don't then do that and you'll have a much better understand of anything japanese, anime critics are all worthless sencodary trash, I'd rather listen to the sound of a deer's diarrhea than their rubbish

>unironically talking about e-celebs
It's time to stop.

Well I should probably pick it up again soon. I stopped because I didn't like the sound of Japanese working life.

We will discuss whatever in the fuck we want.

what, just learn fucking japanese nigger, who said anything about working there

...

>who said anything about working there
That's why I was learning it originally. I might just learn it for anime, vidya and music.

better time spent than watching anime c*itics

>redflag

High school setting for the sake of it is the big one. Also having that one self insert protagonist that is essentially a retard with a heart of gold.

Because its a good filter to keep normalfags like you from watching japanese cartoons

>I'm not watching moeshit and isekai because I'm not a normalfag

you can start nitpicking female and children sexualization and think about anime deempowers women

or just enjoy the fucking anime until there are glaring flaws, abdunance of QUALITY or plot inconsistencies/retardations that make the show unwatchable for you

There is no "objective" sense of what is good or bad.
Even in the example of SAO. Let's say a the objective of a "good" show is to get people to enjoy it. The studio put out a good-looking piece of media, that a lot of people enjoyed and purchased. Doesn't that, by all means, mean its a good show?

What about shows, such as Flip Flappers, which didn't do so well financially but a very small group of people really liked it? Does that make it a good show?

On that measure, SAO touched more people than Flip Flappers has by a large margin, so you could say that SAO is a better show than Flip Flappers.

>implying moeshit and isekai are not normalfag-tier bullshit

If you said loli then i might agree with you

But I do watch those cartoons. I don't follow your logic.

Normalfags hate criticism. They go batshit insane if some faggot would manage to shit on their favourite japanimation.

I'm pretty sure anime critics aren't huge fans of loli shows though

Because they mostly devolve into softcore porn with no actual story content

How does any of those 2 make a show not good tho?

That's mostly just kids. Adults don't tend to care if other people hate things they like.

at least they keep away normalshits like you

Just find things you like and don’t and talk about it. Going into something with the mindset of being critical is a joyless shortcut.

God, I want to eat her ass.

>Things like direction, animation etc
You're unlikely to get much insight on this by watching/reading amateur or semi-pro net critics, who tend to focus on narrative and characterization, and generally trend toward hot takes more than thoughtful analysis. If you want to learn about the formalist side of things, you are probably better off looking for sources that talk about the history and theory of animation, as well as just general film theory stuff.

I wish there was an RLM styled anime reviewer(s). Drunk out of their minds and letting the flow speak instead of a carefully prepared script.

This. I just watch shows, and while I can notice the stuff that is being done, I only get overly analytical with stuff I really like because I want to understand it. Otherwise I just move on after thinking about the show for a bit if it was good.

yellowflags for me:
- characters that rather than having a distinct personality that might clash with the audience's, are made to be more appealing to a broader audience for the purpose of self-insertion (because it sells more)
- appeal to the audience's emotional side as the main selling point (because it sells more)
- too much focus on style (sakuga, fight choreography), overuse of fight segments that look too slow, overextended (sometimes to give it more emotional weight, see the item above, sometimes to artificially build expectation, "hype", for what's going to happen next), or too fast, and lack of meaningfulness behind each and every action (in real life, sword fights can be decided on a single mistake, while in many anime/manga, the combatants fight like they can ignore said mistakes as if they're not fatal, as if they're playing a MMO tanker-type character. Even fist fights can be decided on a single mistake, in real life, but in many anime/manga, most supposedly expert combatants don't seem to care about being hit).

The only way to do it is to figure out your own feelings, and figure out why something makes you feel that why.
Saying out loud why something makes you feel a certain way is the material of good criticism.
All of the high academia aspect of criticism only becomes useful in academic analysis, which is for bores.
Watch anime, keep track of how it makes you feel, and find out why you feel that way.
