Turkey already has a presence in Syria regardless whether Afrin is controlled by Turkey or not. Playing nice with Turkey is the best for Syria right now. Assad doesn't like the Iranians and wants to replace them with Turkey I believe. Turkey could make a settlement in Syria possible without the US and let Assad stay in power, but that will probably only happen after the Turkish election 2019.
