That's a good point, according to their treaty with Poland the UK would've been obliged to treat the Soviet Union as their enemy, just like Germany.
The Brits knew what would happen if they egged on Poland to not accept any negotiations with Germany over the terrible treatment of the German minority in Poland.
Polish gov officials even admitted that they wouldn't have acted this way without the guarantees of Britain.

happened, both these countries were absolutely un-prepared for war. The brits and french barely crossed the german border, heard a twig break under their shoes, and ran away crying.
Their only hope of survival was crossing their fingers and praying to God that Hitler will be bogged down in Poland, winter is literally a month away, giving the useless brits and french time to prepare their useless defenses.
Aaaaaand then the Soviets invade with 2 million troops and thousands of tanks. Here's what went through the british/french minds:

The Foreign Secretary Lord Halifax responded that the obligation of British Government towards Poland arising out of the Anglo-Polish Agreement, was restricted to Germany, according to the first clause of the secret protocol.
Basically the Eternal Anglo tricked Poland to take their side if Germany attacked, but in turn if Soviets invaded Poland, they could deny needing to do shit. This would also give UK a great casus belli against Germany in case they attacked Poland.
