A little backstory about the commemoration day of Latvian legionnaires, and the furor that usually follows:
Legonnaires day became infamous only in 1998, when a Swedish national news agency proclaimed that this signals "the rebirth of Fascism in Latvia" Russian media started to pick this up only a year later. And next it was our very govt. that started to alienate the legonnaires and cease supporting them (they used to partake in the ceremony too) ever since "the international community" told them to stop. They have effectively ceased all support towards the veterans. There even was an idea to make this a national holiday - a day off, but this got rejected all because Swedish, and later Russian cries of racism and fascism. Now the only people to officially support and organize are our nationalist party, while the (still) leading Russian/liberal party constantly calls for a ban of this commemoration, all while fervently celebrating the 9th of May - "liberation day" as they call it.
This is not a celebration of "Fascism/Nazism & racism" contrary to what many of the western and most Russian media are surely churning out right now, but a commemoration day of Latvian legionnaires, forest brothers and other anti-bolshevik fighters.
Here is a fresh article about this. Notice how the very first comment is from an anglophone named "REAL HISTORY" even when the site is very small and in Latvian only. Note how the very first thing they do is point out what happens to those whom the self proclaimed victims judge to be in the wrong.
Not once that I have been on Sup Forums have I seen anyone show any interest in this event.
