All Russia is trying to do is get some respect back from the international community. The 90s were rough and humiliating for them. The fall from being the worlds second superpower to an chaotic state run by the mafia and oligarchs was a far one. Putin, like it or not, did a lot to bring back order and stability. The second part of that is to make Russia once again a world power, and to get the respect they lost back.
Russia is attacking us because basically 1. there's a built in, cultural animosity for Americans from Soviet times and 2. we're the logical tiger to attack in order to get that respect/world prestige back. If you're trying to make a name for yourself on the prison yard, you hit the biggest guy first.
That being said, I'm not sure how it helps us as Americans to kiss Putin's ass. I'm not a big fan of the guy. I also don't think we should be following the Russian bot farms in praising Russia as some moral, Christian place and America as the decadent West when that's pretty far from the reality I saw there.
