Who working in anime could be described as an auteur? Someone with a distinctive and recognisable style.

The Master, of course.
She has a shitty style tho
How are we defining "auteur"? Because if you're using the traditional conception, there are very, very few anime directors who qualify—an auteur needs to have total creative control over the work. There are a few special cases (it's probably fair to call ABe Yoshitoshi an "auteur" when it comes to Haibane Renmei, but not on his other shows), including pic related, but basically it'll be the Big Name directors alone. Yamada has a distinctive style, but she's not a true auteur—simply an important cog in the KyoAni machine.
But if we're talking simply about people who are really distinctive, we can get deep into the staff list—from animators like Nakamura Yutaka to musicians like Kanno Yoko to color designers like Yasuda Michiyo. And, uh, then this would become a sakuga thread, which I think is heresy on Sup Forums?

>an auteur needs to have total creative control over the work
Nah an auteur just needs a distinctive and recognisable style that carries across multiple works. French film critics writing for Cahiers du Cinema in the 1950s came up with the auteur theory mainly writing about the works of directors with very little creative control working in the Hollywood studio system. You can still be an auteur even if you're just a work for hire.
Matsumoto Rie
Kenji Tsuruta
Nakamura Ryousuke + Mieko Hosoi
—Glad to see you know about alt+0151—
This FABULOUS MAX motherfucker.
Akiyuki Shinbo's work is pretty avantgarde, he loves to play with different styles, but he works on so many different projects that it's hard to know what he really did.
Yup, that guy's a fucking genius.
Both Gen Urobuchi and NisiOisin (Though he doesn't directly work on any anime) are fantastic authors.
Yuki Kajiura probably makes the best soundtracks (Madoka)
>Nakamura Ryousuke + Mieko Hosoi
THIS
I hope they're not going to be stuck making awesome OP and ED forever though.
Gen used to be an auteur until he started slapping his name on a tonne of stuff he had no involvement in and diluted his name into worthlessness.
This post gave me cancer
>Who working in anime could be described as an auteur?
No one should ever be called that. Are you a hipster from the early 2000s? That aside, you're probably after some meme writer like Nisio.
Masaaki Yuasa
Satoshin Kon
Miyazaki
Shinichiro Watanabe
Can confirm the cancer thing.
Oshii
Oishi

Pretty shitty
I only know Fate/Zero and Madoka and those were pretty good.
He's a pretty good author but has made some deals with the devil and is linking his name to some shitty anime where he only did minor work (writed a couple episodes or made the scenario) instead of making new original series.
>Nakamura Ryousuke
Is the rest of his work as good as his Aoi Bungaku episodes were? Where do I begin with his work?
Mouryou no hako.
>Is the rest of his work as good as his Aoi Bungaku episodes were?
Absolutely.
Watch Aiura, if you like CGDCT.
Watch Hai to Gensou no Grimgar, if you like fantasy/RPG.
Watch Nerawareta Gakuen, if you prefer a melodrama (with gorgeous animation).
I see. In that case I shall only praise his work, not himself.
Oishi is garbage

>Late 90s - mid 00s had loads of interesting and unique original anime shows crafted with care by anime auteurs
>10s has just been wall to wall Manga and LN adaptations that just exist to advertise the source material
Why did anime originals just completely dry up? Is it the death of home media or something?
You gotta get funding from somewhere. Anime originals are kinda hard to secure because of that, and more importantly most of them suck, I really enjoyed PriPri, however.
Most of them do suck I agree but the vast majority of anime in general sucks and at least with anime originals you might get an actually conclusion rather than just stopping at an arbitrary point and telling you to read the manga.
>you might get an actually conclusion rather than just stopping at an arbitrary point and telling you to read the manga.
I agree to some extent, if anime originals actually got a decent ending too. Most adaptations at least have the decency of stopping at some sort of "ending" that's just as satisfying if not more than recent anime originals. Like PriPri, again, better fucking get that S2. But Mayoiga's whole thing fucking sucked, and I wish I could get my time spent on it back.
Anime originals aren't dead. In fact, there's even more nowadays than in the 90s

>most of them suck
Tsuki ga Kirei is unironically the greatest love story ever told though. I agree most of the others were shit though.
