Just bought a half steer from local farmer. No hormones, all grass fed. 3 bucks per pound.

Our food prices have soared, because there are so many on EBT spending their Monopoly bux on food. Ever been to a grocery store when their gibs reset? They're loading their carts up with processed garbage. One of the few items they purchase that requires any sort of preparation is raw beef.

American corn farming is completely subsidized. We grow so much corn that the price is dirt cheap. The government pays the difference of a bare minimum per bushel to the farmers when the market price is below that. We grow so much corn (and growing) that the price is always falling. To say that corn prices are going up is ignorant of what corn farming is in the US. They will only stay steady or go down unless Nebraska catches fire.

This is the only way to go, but sadly it will gain popularity thus driving the price up.

At my local supermarket beef pieces are around 22€ per kilogram.

If you're willing to buy a side of beef, a whole hog or wait for deals you can get a lot of very good meat for 2-3 bucks a lb depending where you live in the country.

10 years ago a 50lb bag of corn was $6.99 at the local feed store. Now it's $13.99. Yes, prices go up over time but no other animal feed went up more than a dollar or two in this same span, and it's not even processed and doesn't even have any nutritional additives. It's literally dried whole corn in a sack. So in the past 10 years the price of raising one steer has *at least* doubled, if not more.

Well it's going to get more expensive if it starts getting exported to Japan and elsewhere.

It is cheaper because the steer doesn't have to go to be processed and the farmer can get MSRP for selling it himself rather than half that by going through middle men, and he doesn't have to add on the additional cost of grocery stores, too. That's why it's cheaper.

Grocery prices are pretty fair here, as long as you know how to shop and how to cook. Get a vacuum sealer and stock up when meats are on sale. Then portion them out and keep your freezer stocked. Just date everything and rotate through what you use so you don't waste it.

I love my bacon, steaks and all that just as much as anyone else, but people tend to overeat it by giving themselves absolutely huge portions for every meal. Too much red meat can give you cholesterol problems, and you can eat too much protein. If you eat more protein then you body needs it turns it into sugar in a process called gluconeogenesis. Along with many other little things that people don't consider, like an excess of ammonia and nitrogen.

But I think that more of a 'people don't pay attention to nutrition as much as they should' problem and not just a red meat problem.
