Because the economic situation in Europe improved dramatically after WWII. My ancestors (from Italy mostly) migrated here between 1890 and 1930.

It was about opportunities. Back in the day, most people were poor, and the Americas still had vast areas of land to farm and had more opportunities due to fewer legal and economic restrictions and much larger markets for entrepreneurs. In the years following the war, the standard of living in Europe improved drastically. North America provided fewer opportunities, and South America became infested with shitskins and political instability.
