The congratulations ending is the metaphorical ending where Shinji gets over his depression and accepts he's an individual worthy of love and self-love and inherent value.

Was he strangling her because it was sort of a continuation of him strangling her in Instrumentality? During Instrumentality, did Asuka see that Shinji just wanted to fuck her? And that's why she sort of taunted him? If so, what did Shinji see of Asuka? What did Asuka think of him? Or did he just get a taste of her mother issues, and they weren't fully gooped?

It's a nice story about someone who manages to get over depression and helped me cope with it somewhat. I know EVA is kind of a meme at this point but I would recommend the TV run and skipping EoE to anyone who's dealing with depression.
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Neon genesis Evangelion. The theme exploration is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of the psychology of pubescent children most of the ideas will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Shinji’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterization- his personal philosophy draws heavily from J. D. Salinger's literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these themes, to realise that they’re not just interesting- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike NGE truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the meaning in Shinji’s existential catchphrase “I mustn't run away," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev’s Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Hideaki Anno's genius story telling unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them.

the scene makes perfect sense in context of the characters and overall message of communication and fear, resorting to this decoder-ring style meta reading limits your ability to really get much out of the series (or really any series)

Revival of Evangelion. It combines EOE with an improved version of Death (the theatrical version of the TV series). Apparently it was they had originally envisioned for a Eva movie, but the only way to watch it is to buy an expensive box set.
