The ethno-nationalist route would require someone hijacking a populist revolt, similar to what Iran did with the anti-Shah revolt in the late 70s. The corporate-colonist setup of the early British empire seems like the best way to do colonization of races which can't seriously resist. A single Marine regiment - properly armed, equipped, and supported - could genocide entire sub-Saharan African nations.
