Sangatsu no I-DO-NOT-KNOW-WHAT-SUBTLETY-IS Lion

You told me it was a realistic portrait of bullying. Realistic my ass! That's a fucking soap opera!

All those violins, tears and slow motion. Geez...

>There’s direction in my anime! Help!

Your fault for listening to a bunch of nobodies on Sup Forums.

What was unrealistic about the bullying? You are talking about the presentation of it.

>expecting subtlety from shaft

>>There’s music in my anime! Help!
Sappy music.
>>There’s emotion in my anime! Help!
Forced emotion.
>>There’s direction in my anime! Help!
Heavy-handed as fuck.

>You are talking about the presentation of it.
If the presentation is melodramatic, the content is melodramatic as well. The medium is the massage. Teachers and bullies are treated in a stereotyped way.

I agree with OP, I was told the bullying arc was even better than Koe no katachi but it doesn't hold a candle to it.

Blame SHAFT

>animeflv.net
what is that

Spanish version of kissanime

You know why I never bothered watching even a minute of this series?

It's called "March Comes In Like a Lion"

The fuck does that mean? Does the show climax during March? Does anything have to do with the month March? Why is it a Lion?
Oh right its just a title that would get people who think obscure meaningless titles are cool to watch it. Yeah fuck your pretentiously titled show.

When is depressed shogi boy coming back? The shogi bits and Kiriyama dealing with his depression was the interesting part of the anime.

Consider that the adaptation might be at fault here.

The message is the personal stories of Rei and the sisters from their own points of view. The bullying was credible (in both cases: Rei's and Hinata's friend's, but people only seem to have a problem with the latter), as was the outburst at home. You can not like it, but expecting a manga that's entirely about the emotional state of their characters to suddenly present a detached, documentary style view of bullying that affects two of the protagonists is extremely autistic.

He's not really depressed, just a robot. That's what he's learning through his interactions with real people.

Melodrama is a genre, not a pejorative. 3gatsu isn't quite a melodrama, but it's very close, and that's perfectly fine for everyone who wants big emotions and sweeping imagery.

>violins
>slow motion
Nigger, what does that have to do with realism? Are you retarded?

If you need a direct parallel, the town they live in is called March Town, but ultimately it's just supposed to get across the idea that the period of life Kiriyama is going through is inherently stormy. Things aren't pretentious just because you're too stupid to figure out their simple meaning.

time slows down when you hear violins playing.

I mean it was a realistic portrait of bullying apart from the teaching laughing it off as pranks.

This is why I get annoyed when Shogi takes over episodes because they deprive us of good shit like this.

I'm just glad it's flopping.

pleb

I'm seeing a lot of hate threads for this show by people who are clearly plebs and casuals. This must have been what it was like when Eva was airing.

Are you ESL?
"March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb" is an old proverb about winter/spring.

Legit baffled that some people can hate this anime. Shit is comfy and cozy as fuck.

It was mostly social exclusion and the victim never complained about it. The teacher didn't want to get involved in what looked like some kids' schoolyard drama. There are many teachers like that and they are always discussed in bullying specials like the ones the grandpa was talking about.

>The bullying was credible
The bullying is melodramatic. The victim is cute and has good intentions, the agressor is mean and has bad intentions. And that's it. The gray areas are all eliminated. And the direction only takes advantage of this to make the audience cry. Easy money.

Isnt this because "Well ist made by Shaft so its shit"

not him, but, nowadays melodrama is used as something pejorative 99% of the time. and sangatsu is mostly a melodrama.

So is rom-com by people who dislike the genre, but that doesn't make it inherently bad. I'd also note that the big difference between 3gatsu and melodrama is that it has more nuanced characters.

A rule of thumb is that if it is made by SHAFT it is neither comfy nor good.

Maybe the show is just bad.

>The victim is cute and has good intentions, the agressor is mean and has bad intentions.
As if this isn't the case in real life most of the time.

>the agressor is mean and has bad intentions
We need more shows about cute, well meaning bullies. Surely that will be more realistic, as there are no such things and bitches and cruel kids in real life.

...

>basing your opinions on the popularity of a board that pushes shit like Kemono Friends and DBS
No, thanks.

>things as

>the agressor is mean
Bullies are mean? Shit, no one told me.

You call it melodrama when you watch a drama and expect there to be no drama. Then after you watch the drama you complain that the drama wasn't done well enough for you, then you talk about it on Sup Forums, instead of watching more anime that you like that doesn't have melodrama.
Do you think you're winning this?

You're asking for a spanking.

Dude, is fucking SHAFT, did you really expected anything else.

If you take out all the monogataris they are not that bad. It's those that make their average quality plummet.

But the point is that only this side is shown. It's a stereotype. When the author chooses to show only the stereotype, he doesn't want to be realistic, he is trying to manipulate you emotionally. It's easier when everything is black and white.

This show is one of if not THE best directed shows I have ever seen in my life, anime or otherwise. It's like Shinbo took all of his crazy, off the wall shit from Monogatari and went "what if I used this in moderation and to effect instead of just as spectacle?"

Monogatari was just R&D for this show.

I dropped Madoka because of the pretentious visuals, they ruined what could have been a nice Nisekoi adaption and that one series with the lesbian and the trap was also fucked up.
The older stuff might be debatable, but I also don't like any of those.

The idea is realistic. Bullying is something real that causes isolation and often results in school change.

The development is not realistic because it does not give room for nuances, it is only victim A versus bully B.

And the presentation is not realistic because if it were there would not be so many aesthetic interventions.

>Pretentious visuals
ffs

>animeflv.net

You're a fucking disgusting animal.

you forgot about forced animation

>It's like Shinbo took all of his crazy
Compared to Monogatari, yes. Compared to everything else, definitely not. The shaftisms are still there. Only blind people don't see it.

The idea that gray morality is required for nuance is only held by teenagers who've got their first taste of something deeper than a saturday morning cartoon and think it's the only thing that exists, or by people who are too stubbron to let their views evolve from then.

Most adults learn that sometimes in thsi world, people do bad things and they know they're bad things. Sometimes people have moments of weakness, but sometimes they just don't care. Man is a cruel, callous creature at the core, despite all our efforts to be something else.

Have you read the entirety of this arc in the manga yet?

Why is it so hard to understand about the story being told from the narrator's (Rei) point of view? It's not the story about bullying in that girl's school. There was never any obligation to present all sides. You are just being obtuse not wanting to accept this.

Hidamari, Danmachi and this are all great. Many others have at least great style and visuals. They are far from the worst studio.

nice edge

I meant to say soremachi, not that other trash.

Of course it's still different from other works, that's kind of my whole point.

If Monogatari is buckshot, 3-gatsu is a rifle. It's got a lot of the directorial techniques from Monogatari like the visual hyperbole and unique ways of showing the passage of time, but they're applied with more restraint and purpose in this show.

I'm not knockin Monogatari, mind you; it wouldn't be itself if it wasn't so unabashedly unrestrained, but it really feels like 3-gatsu is the result of Shinbo using what he learned from experimenting in Monogatari.

Edgy would be the person implying that everyone's grey and no actions could have pure motivations.

>Man is a cruel, callous creature at the core, despite all our efforts to be something else.
And I'm the teenager, right?

I'm not saying that man doesn't do bad things, I'm saying that his doing bad things does not mean he's bad 100% of the time, got it?

I'm fucking tired of these lazy stories about bullying in which the bullies are shown as if they were villains and victims are shown as if they were cute puppies.

>and sangatsu is mostly a melodrama
I would say it's mostly shogi anime

Shaft has never done subtlety in their entire miserable existence, why would they start now?

Rei's bullying (at school and at home) is more nuanced because he's the one reminiscing about it and recognizing his own flaws. From Hinata's point of view the bullied girl was 100% a cute puppy who dindu nothing wrong.

>It's not the story about bullying in that girl's school. There was never any obligation to present all sides.
I'd agree with you if it ended with this chapter. However, if it adapts the manga as expected, it's going to take this big moral stance and attempt to make social commentary on bullying in general and its difficulties in addressing it. At that point, I think a fair examination of all sides would be in order.

Where the fuck did I say they're evil all the time? Man's a bastard that tries not to be. Some people try less than others. You just want a pet-the-dog moment for the asshole to appease what you think is good writing when it's entirely pointless for the story. Some people are just fuckin assholes. And yeah, they're probably not 100% bastard all of the time, but think of the bully-types you know. How often do you see them doing something nice just to prove how grey they are out in public? Not very often. It's not relevant to the experience of the show that maybe he bought his mom a nice mother's day gift or what the fuck ever. You want characters to be unrealistically grey. Nevermind the victim in question here is aleeady seen handling things very immaturely.

Bully is pretty one-sided anyway by definition, so I don't know what you're looking for.

There will be time for that. As an anime watcher only I stand by what I said. To be honest I don't think the episode at her school was even that bad or one-sided; any bullying story where the victim is completely passive and never tries to do anything about it is not painting those victims in the best light. Not only did she not tell the teachers, she didn't tell her parents either and began to skip school until her mother had to go through the pain of changing schools. There's a limit to how much of a target you can make yourself before some of the blame falls on you as well. It was even mentioned that she isolated herself when the other girls began to talk shit about her behind her back and that it became a vicious circle.

I agree with this. I see pic related and ask, "What if she had just respected their wishes and moved on?"
I get the feeling there's plenty of blame to go around here.

>Forced emotion.
Opiniom discarded.

Its an old proverb about how the beginning of spring is stormy and rough but the end is gentle and nice. Rei is in a difficult part of his life at the beginning but the bad times are slowly passing.

>girl comes from a loving family
>see her friend getting bullied
>don't know how to help friend
>friend moves away
>confused, mad, angry at herself for failing to help friend
>lashes out at bullies
>now target of bullying
>seeking comfort from her family

I'm sorry you have a shitty family and no one loves you OP.

All this in a soap opera approach.

I'm sorry if your heart is easy to manipulate, user.

Define "soap opera approch," buzzword-kun.

Have you every watched a soap opera?
This doesn't come close to that territory.

"melodrama" "pretentious" "edgy" "moe" "forced animation" "no plot" "cute girls" ...

Grow up. You are watching cartoons. Noone will take you seriously if you use this words. But I understand, I was the same when I was an edgy 18 year old kiddo. In 10 years you will just look back and laugh at the stupid shit you were saying in past and you will finally grow up and watch cartoons like they are meant to be watched. For fun.

I am having a lot of fun, I watch around 30 shows each season and have a great time with 80% of them, but SHAFT is pretentious garbage. I like Nisio as a writer but because of their unique quirks that they have to put into everything they animate, I could not watch gatari. I liked Nisekoi but they had to spice that up too, just like that Vocaloid trash.
You can have an identity as a studio without having to shove it down the viewers throat.

You don't know what pretentious means.

>having a unique art style is forcing the studio's identity down your throat
what is this meme? I mean, I suppose that's valid if you don't feel their little animation quirks are good, but what is wrong with them having them?

I just don't get how people can hate such a lovely and well produced show.
No accounting for taste I guess.

Can't believe people are falling for these reddit-tier baits.

>sponsored by NHK
>still selling 2k average
>successful movie adaptation
>shitton of famous people in the industry mention watching it and some even did ED cards
Hell, even Yoko Taro tweeted about the anime.

OP has been whining since the thread on Saturday, but he couldn't have the last word in that one

And it's still flopping, no amount of shilling from nhk and aniplex has saved this show

Ah alright, thanks for confirming you're a retard.

Did you see how quickly this season got announced? Do you even know how NHK shows work? This is guaranteed a third season.

>Hell, even Yoko Taro tweeted about the anime.
You serious? show please

Let's say you love to put litle hearts in the letters "i". And then you need to write an essay about, I dunno, shogi. But instead of bothering to write a good text, you are only concerned with forcing "i" letters to put little hearts on them.

That's the problem with Shaft. The studio wants to put little hearts on everything. Even when it is not necessary.

And remember: just because the style is unique does not mean it's good.

This would be Shaft's Hyouka if they tried to make it purely about shogi. Shogi is boring as fuck.

mobile.twitter.com/yokotaro/status/926506383280762880
He mentioned it a few times but my nip is too weak so I don't follow his tweets closely.

>Hyouka is boring

I agree, if he keeps this hopeful outlook on life I won't be enjoying S2.

>Define "soap opera approch," buzzword-kun.
All the aspects are exaggerated: the crying, the colors, the soundtrack. It's as if the direction is begging you to get emotional instead of letting it happen naturally.
I'm from Mexico.

>A soap opera would be just shooting the scene flat without direction to enhance the mood you dip

But that's the most satisfying and healing part of the story, no need to be such an edgelord

soap opera is a pejorative term for cheap drama, fella

Nothing to do with being an edgelord.
People are attracted to drama, happily ever after stories are just boring.
Which is why people enjoy the Inferno and Purgatorio parts of the Divine Comedy and not the Paradiso part.
Or why the first part of Faust is considered a mastepiece, while the second part is meh.

Fuck happy stories, anime is full of those. Give me good drama where I can cry bitch tears.

3-gatsu is not melodrama. Half of the running time is occupied with the main character detailing what goes on in his mind, going over his past and the way that events and other people affect him. It's called introspection.

Melodrama is something like AnoHana. Shows where everyone is always on the brink of having a meltdown and everything orbits around the main dramatic plot in an unrealistic and exaggerated way, like a pornographic movie but with crying and mood swings instead of fucking.

why are people getting surprised by how the show handles drama, when the first season handled it the same way, with the whole "Rei Venting" scene that everyone loved?

The sure sign of a pleb

Nah, a specific type, usually with retardedly large love polyhedrons.

Judging by this thread, I'm pretty sure it's entirely made up of people with a hateboner for Shaft.

>Nothing to do with being an edgelord
Your whole post screams underage edgelord.

Why do you follow something and keep expectations while the manga is out and people keep telling you that your perception is wrong? This has always been a healing show, the characters have tragic pasts but the story isn't here to make them suffer more but instead to mend the wounds.

There's a weird population of bullying apologists in this board, in addition to the usual baiters. This is not the first thread we've had about this scene.
