Depends how you look at it. MC's have had a tendency towards patheticness for nigh on a century now, but how that patheticness has been emphasized changes. Nowadays MC's tend to be a lot more self aware and self flagellating. Previously, there had been a period where they reveled in their loserdom and generally being a stain upon the human race. These things always go through phases, but at least in recent decades little had changed about the story beats or relationships. Just the tones.

He's a step up from Beta MCs take their entire series to confess and only perform 1 kiss.

There's still some based ones from time to time. There's more pandering to a spineless audience so they can self-insert though.
