I am a young college professor at a major university. I have studied both sides of the gun control debate as well as the history and results of similar events in other nations, so I am more than qualified to speak on the issue. That being said, there is no reason for civilian gun ownership in the United States. The second amendment was written at a time much different from today when we had no standing military, everyone was expected to be a part of the militia, and the only "arms" were muskets. Well, now we have a military and advanced weaponry so there is no need for a militia.
On top of that, there are no instances of other nations having to use their guns to combat a "tyrannical" government and, in the more than 200 years since 1776 there has never been a tyrannical government in the U.S. So that whole argument is largely irrelevant.
Other nations that have removed guns from their populace have vastly lower crime rates and no mass shootings. Australia and the UK to name a few.
The best thing the U.S. can do is start listening to reason and start rolling back second amendment. It's not too late.
