Bitch, there were LOADS of light novel adaptions before Haruhi. Hell, Slayers pretty much codified the "Dragon Quest Parody" genre in the 90s.

His inner monologues in the LN are still outstanding. Especially how it's sometimes left ambiguous what's an inner monologue and what not.

He's also well-written. His internal conflicts make sense from the beginning of the series to the Disappearance epilogue and connect with the themes of the story. He's not snarky just for the sake of it.

1. It was one of if not the first very well animated high school comedies, which before that were usually garbage-tier production
2. I drew peoples attention in hard with it's very odd broadcast order. Made people want to tune in every week to see wtf would happen next..
3. The meta awareness was kind of ahead of it's time in it's genre. It came out at a perfect, refreshing time.

This. And on top of being actually good as a character, Sugita's acting was spot on at portraying the right balance of pessimism, laziness and frustration without being plain unlikeable or unnatural. His intro narration on Melancholy I is still one of my favorite voice acting moments ever.
