I think the episode where Garma dies is fucking 11/10. Ghiren's speech at the funeral gives me shivers every time, and I love the way that we see all the other characters in the show reacting to it.

My favorite episode is the one where Char fights amuro and lalah dies, I think it is episode 41, I also liked the episode when some backwater zeon grunts planted bombs on the gundam.
Favorite character is Kai Shiden and my favorite mech is the gouf.

Favorite episode is tough. Maybe the one where Amuro starts moving too fast for the RX-78 to handle, or maybe the one when Amuro goes nuts on the mine, or maybe the fight at the base in Brazil. Favorite character is either Amuro or Sleggar, because he hits everyone in the face. I assume this question comes with the stipulation "besides Char" since otherwise that's the only correct answer. Favorite mech would be any of Char's custom red suits, with the Doms as a close second.

Consider, though, that only a true auteur can take a toy commercial assignment and come up with a deeply philosophical and cautionary tale poignantly highlighting the horrors and tragedy of the human condition brought about by hubris, lack of empathy and vicious circles of revenge - all this in a narrative heavily unfused with Buddhist symbolism. Or just a huge autist like Tomino.

Mazinger Z trilogy, Daimos trilogy, Leijiverse shows, and Getter Robo had already elevated mecha anime to a very self aware and thoughtful place to be honest. It's not like Tomino came out of nowhere and made high art out of the worst genre imaginable. As far as children's cartoons go, super robot shows have always been fairly ambitious and interesting, going back to Astro Boy and Cyborg 009.
