It's bizarre because I believe these particular gooks are pretty high IQ and yet they spend all their money on ridiculously dumb shit like designer clothing or aesthetic upgrades to their house. I know a Malaysian man, Pinay and Vietnamese women who all make a pretty decent salary and all 3 are living paycheck to paycheck because they cannot possibly go without upgrading to each iteration of cell phone and are compelled to go on fancy vacations constantly.
One of them just spent like $15k on granite countertops and a state of the art refrigerator.

I work with almost every stripe of them including Japs and Chinese and the East Asians are not like this at all.
Most are of the Chinese Vietnamese flavor but they really do span the entire spectrum of Asians. In my experience they're simultaneously very frugal and yet ridiculously materialistic. I admire frugal people and am not materialistic myself, but I can understand how growing up poor can make you crave expensive things.
