I think what they were building up to was that the other 3 in the group didn't know if Haruhi or Kyon was God so they kinda played both sides and told Haruhi she had to keep Kyon entertained and told Kyon he had to keep humoring Haruhi's impulses.

I think Haruhi is as powerful as they say she is, but I think he's the one who made her that way. He was bored with life and subconsciously wanted a counterpart. Yuki probably knows, and the others at least suspect it probably.
