Exactly as I thought. They just baked a mixture of powdered potatoes, sugar, salt, and water. I'm no /ck/ faggot, but I think that's headed towards hardtack type of "bread", which would be quite shitty to eat for a long time.

You can grow fruits and vegetables in weird shapes easily enough, you just have to put them in a mold to conform to.
This is hard when it's a tuber that grows underground like a potato, but if you can get the mold around the root that will become the potato without killing the plant, it should do fine.

Vitamin deficiencies frequently aren't fatal, you can live a long time chronically short on something like vitamin A.
It's just generally uncomfortable and generally suboptimal. Potatoes have enough nutritional content to sustain humans indefinitely, even if they're deficient in certain areas.

No one involved in the production process has ever has the experience of being undernourished in the way they are. I doubt they're able to predict exactly how we'd respond. The show is a parable, don't sweat the details.
