Last time Gohan actually did something, I guess.
Great Saiyaman was the greatest costume to ever be worn in a shonen anime
the Kai outfit worn by Gohan is also up there
Started off okay. It was nice seeing DB without goku. I would have preferred if gohan took the reigns as the main character. I didn't like the design of Buu and he was to similar to cell. The mistake was trying to one up cell. Not every arch needs a super strong baddie.
Best saga with the best soundtrack.
Japanese soundtrack of course.
>Not every arch needs a super strong baddie
What else would they do?
I liked what they were doing with gohan going to high school. They could have done a super hero thing minus the cringe of saiyaman. It could have been interesting seeing the Z warriors struggling with the fact there is nobody to fight. They could have done a tournament arch with lower stakes. I would have loved to see Gohan take over as Vegetas new rival. I'm not saying never have a strong villain again. I just think Buu was over the top
Worst manga arc, but the anime had some solid animation.
The biggest waste of potential in the whole series.
/thread
best arc in all of anime. everything made after that pales in comparison
Worst arc of the manga. Only the Cell saga comes close to being as bad in comparison.
DBZ just got worse with every arc.
Saiyan arc > Namek arc > Cell arc > Buu arc
The quality just degraded over time.
Good stuff marred a bit by some of Toriyama's weaker art and tonal whiplash.
I like it more than the Android/Cell stuff.
Wish that Toriyama took it seriously and made him into an actual hero.
The comedy would come from normal people reacting to saiyaman and gohan's attempts at having a normal highschool life.
Having friends being more important then being famous and what not. Plus having ChiChi telling him to keep his powers secret would be fun.
But I guess it being a sort of mirror to the modern interpretation of superman would piss off too many losers.
>early Buu saga
Why are shonen so good when they're just slice of life with a bit of fighting mixed in?
One of the better arcs of dragonball. It sort of chills out from the hyper seriousness of Cell and has enough silliness and comedy to offset the horror. Buu is a much more fun villain to me than anyone from the android saga and is still one of Dragonball's better characters in my opinion. Seeing Gohan at school and being the Great Saiyaman was God tier, It was nice to see everyone meeting back up for a tournament and I really like everyone's updated designs. Fusion is one of the more interesting power up gimmicks in the series and both ways that it's done are just the right amount of cool and funny. It brought a nice bookend conclusion to Vegeta's character arc. Goku and Vegeta's bantering is probably some of the most enjoyable character interaction in Z. And finally the finale with everyone Goku's met along the way feeding into the spirit bomb, assisted by Mr. Satan, a gag character we all would've assumed would not come back after the Cell saga.
In all honesty the only down side is that Buu is too indestructible and the constant powerups becomes tiring.By the time we're through the arc you're just ready for it to end. That compounded with Toriyama's art clearly getting a lot more sketchy and angular kind of makes it a rocky ride. But I honestly think it's the most fun arc after the saiyan saga.
>minus the cringe of saiyaman
Shut the fuck up
>"Great Saiyaman" was the reason I initally stopped watching Dragon Ball Z
>start watching Super several years later
>finally go back and watch the rest of Z
>GS still sucks horribly
>Buu is a literal retard with ridiculous power(though not to the same degree as Zeno)
>"Kamikaze Ghost Attack"
>Buu's transformations are even more nonsensical than those of Saiyans
The only really good thing about the arc was when Buu turned annoying ass Chichi into an egg
>It could have been interesting seeing the Z warriors struggling with the fact there is nobody to fight
Actually I think I enjoy more the fact that everyone seems to have just moved on or is over it after Cell. Like that phase of their life is behind them. I think I wish they doubled down on the "next generation" idea more having the focus shift moreso to the kids of all the characters. Maybe have Goten and Trunks as these high potential kids with a desire to go on their own adventures while Gohan kind of takes a piccolo role trying to reign them in and help them out when things get too serious.
Best thing to come out of it.
Drags on too fucking long. Buu overstays his welcome and is an annoying invincible retard.
As shit as it gets.
So much potential and what we got was just generic :(
The episodes until the end of the tournament and around half of the rest of the arc as well as the opening and ending are my favorite part of Dragon Ball. I like the nostalgia factor seeing how much everything has progressed, the art was more polished and even as a kid I thought Gohan and Videl were cute and their relationship was organic.
>Maybe have Goten and Trunks as these high potential kids with a desire to go on their own adventures while Gohan kind of takes a piccolo role trying to reign them in and help them out when things get too serious.
I want this real bad now. It seems like that was the thing Toriyama was originally going for, with Goten pretty much being a mini Goku and all.
english soundtrack was better you otaku fag.
It was kind of a mess, really felt like Toriyama never planned much of anything and just rolled with whatever the editors thought would sell.
Fat/Kid Buu were cute and Satan is great. The actual buildup to Buu release was actually pretty nice, then it simply devolved into some kind of weird parody.
It's interesting how that's when the artwork in the manga went downhill, yet the anime looked better than ever, both art style and animation.
Reminder this fight is like 5 pages in the manga.
To be fair, Toriyama always made shit up as he went along, but Buu and Cell saga definitely suffer from that mentality th emost.
Fusion and Kid Buu arcs were pretty average outside of the Mystic Gohan stuff, but it's still far better than anything in GT and Super.
Buu is exactly the kind of silly, stupid shit that I enjoyed about Dragon Ball. Infinitely more re-readable than Namek or androids.
The arc did have some pretty good character development (Gohan, Vegeta, and even Mr Satan) and some good character moments as well. Unfortunately it also had one of the worst villains in the series.
my best

>It sort of chills out from the hyper seriousness of Cell
This was what made DBZ cool. Nobody watched DBZ for slapstick hijinks. DBZ didn't become the world's #1 anime because of that.
It was decent until Buu awakened.
True, but I don't care. My favorite thing in dragonball was always the mix of action and comedy, and while I like the more serious tone, a complete lack of it just lacks appeal to me.
>implying Gohan getting his ass kicked by a fat fuck wasn't worth it
It is my favorite by far. Best animation, highest stakes, and Vegeta's "You are the best" speech is the shockingly profound cherry on the top.
I also think it's infinitely better dubbed. And I don't mean Kai. Fucking fight me.
That shit was fucking spooky. The moment Buu popped out it was like the whole sequence turned into a horror movie. I don't mind his stupid design or characterization as long as he's doing terrible, terrible things to people.
>The moment Buu popped out it was like the whole sequence turned into a horror movi
This.
Dragon Ball was good, DBZ didn't get good until Buu. DBZ's real legacy was giving us lame cliches that an entire generation of authors copied.
Buu saga was so dumb.
>here's a new enemy with magic powers that we can't deal with even though we're now in the top 5 strongest in the entire universe
>let's continue doing what we've been doing instead of consulting wizards and learning magic
Kais did basically nothing to help even though they should be masters of all disciplines.
A bit annoying at first (why did they let babidi grab energy in the first place?) but it gets better when evil buu appear.
Satuu best couple.
Why did Goku show mercy to Vegeta and Frieza? Why did Vegeta stand by and watch while Cell was preparing to make himself effectively invincible? Why did Goku give Cell a fucking senzu bean?
There is precedent for this, user.
Literally MEMES: The arc
Full of asspulls and retarded ideas. And still better than the Cell arc because at least I had fun with the Buu one.
With teh esception of Satan, Cell arc went to shit after he started voring cyborgs.
>watching dbz shit
Get some taste
If we had it, why would we be here?
That's to be expected, since the piwer curve forces the characters to be more over-the-top instead of focusing on clever writing.
The only good part is that Buu has a Human Genocide Attack
How the fuck do you invent something like that? He must have practiced it at least once, right?
Cell arc > Namek arc > Saiyan arc > Buu arc
Fight me
Is there any site that has decent scans so i can read the buu arc?
haven't watched it until I was in highschool
DBZ somehow had great animation up until the end of the first fight with Vegeta, and after that it became completely unremarkable. Then Sup Forums's most-hated arc rolls around and the animation is suddenly good again (for the most part).
Best arc of DBZ
I don't get how people dislike the Buu Saga. It feels like the first saga since Saiyan that Toriyama actually put effort and care into. It's also the first time since the last 23rd budokai that the fights are actually fun to watch, Buu was an excellent villain for having creative moves and attacks, and Gotenks was too. Man where else do I even go from here, the whole saga just oozed complete creativity that hasn't been since since the red ribbon saga. Satan actually gets a role and it's pretty important, fusion was cool as fuck, Supreme Kai, and Old Kai were great additions. And the whole saga actually has humor throughout it again, which is crazy considering the scale and stakes.
Man I fucking loved Buu, every single form, completely different, and all unique.
Honestly would probably put it as my favorite saga in all of Dragonball, except maybe red ribbon.
Android-Cell arc had some god awful animation at times, especially during the fights between Perfect Cell and Android 19. Some exceptional episodes though with Goku/Gohan against Cell but for the most part it was really subpar.
Keep in mind that one of the lead animators during pre-Freeza arc was starting to do less work on the show.
DBZ's English music is a prototypical pleb filter.
This, so much this. Buu was a breath of fresh air after the stale Cyborgs and dull Cell.
Only one I really like out of these 8 is the Ginyu one.
That is correct
Cell arc is garbage despite Satan and an interesting start.
highschool gohan is a massive cuck.
My favourite part of dragonball Z was the Namek and Frieza ark, I fucking loved them as a kid, the music was the best, the Ginyu force and Frieza's other henchmen were cool, the powerlevels weren't absurd and the whole battle with Goku, Vegeta etc. vs Frieza was great with the pinnacle of Goku going SSJ. The only other cool bit was Future Trunks showing up turning SSJ out of knowhere and trashing Frieza without breaking a sweat, but to be honest DBZ should have ended before then, when everyone became a super saiyan and other adversaries had to keep becoming stupidly strong to pose a threat it all ended up retarded.
A DB thread featuring actual discussion on Sup Forums. Didn't know this was still possible.
DBZ could've easily continued beyond Frieza without messed up power scaling by actually killing Goku and the Super Saiyan legend with him
It was okay, it had some great moments. Saiyan arc > Namek arc> Buu arc>Cell arc
Fuck Gotenks
Was enjoying the fuck out of Gt. Saiyaman, how Gohan was social awkward and his relation with girls and Videl.
Got extremely mad how Supreme Kai seemed like a strong guy that made Piccolo shit his pants off and was actually a silly joke. And how the tournament never happened how it should for some alien shit that could happen later. And Buu Saga dragged too long and shit getting changed through the way(like Gohan couldnt be the hero which was the point of the arc until "Goku is alive again") made things worse because most of the arc was pointless.
Fusions were fine, Mr. Satan with Buu was great, Dabura being a demon was cool, kid Buu was alright, Super Buu was also alright but it was on that point that things were dragging. Fillers were mostly good around the Gt Saiyaman and the tournament, shit like Gohan hiding things from Videl that his friends were aliens or had superpowers despite his dad being there with a halo on his head and a big green as his uncle
Wouldnt have minded that.
Vegeta could have defeated Gohan and made Gohan realize how he should keep training, to not neglect things like that because his father isnt there anymore and Vegeta will not be always there.
It's perfectly acceptable to have shit taste
Bardock, father of Goku > everything else
Seeing Vegeta proud of Gohan in Super when he powered up to fight Goku was pretty cool. I always wished we could've seen more of their dynamic without the overarcing Buu shit interfering back in Z.
smug krillin is best krillin
t. brainlet
Does beating the shit out of him after everyone leaves namek count?
...
>cringe
fuck off, the Great Saiyaman was excellent
...
It had a lot of potential and started off very interesting, but I think it fell apart around the time Goku went Super Saiyan 3. I think the biggest problem is that too many characters got the better of Buu and only failed to put him down due to circumstance or their own stupidity. You had:
>SS3 Goku
>Gotenks
>Ultimate Gohan
>Vegito
>Possibly SS3 Goku again against Kid Buu
And yet you still had Buu presented as this unstoppable juggernaut, which, to be fair, I guess he was against anyone except for the aforementioned characters. It just really breaks the tension when your unstoppable villain only makes it past the halfway point because the heroes keep fucking up. The Buu Saga is also where we really hit the peak of "everyone who isn't a Saiyan really shouldn't even bother showing up". At least Piccolo and kinda/sorta Tien hung in there until the Cell Games. I think a lot of the problem stems from the fact that there really weren't any active villains *except* for Buu at any point after he wakes up.
That said, it did have some of the coolest fights in the series. Goku vs Vegeta is up there with Piccolo vs 17 as far as my personal favorites go, and everything up to and including the tournament was maximum comfy. Overall, though, probably my least favorite arc in Z.
Switch Saiyans and Namek and it'll be fine.
Goku vs kid buu was prett cool
saiymen was literally just proto-One Punch Man
I've never watched or read the Buu Saga, I know what happens due to playing video games, but I was never willing to give it a chance as a kid. The Cell Saga felt like a weird emotional closure as a kid that I STILL remember the feeling of disappointment I felt when it concluded and did a "ON THE NEXT EPISODE OF DRAGON BALL Z" and it was showing Goku doing that tournament, I was not thrilled and dropped DBZ at the time.
Why? I feel like it had some of the most comfy art of the whole series. Cell saga was good in the manga too in my opinion. What am I missing?
but you're missing Gohan banging the shit out of Videl
it was really fun, I actually liked it more than the Cell saga because it was a lot more light hearted, if a bit too long
>Budokai Tenkaichi 3
Why the FUCK haven't they re-released this? My PS2 disc will only last for so long.
well compared to cell sage
>villain actually gets shit done
>several of the best animated fights, even the filler
>a few of the most brutal highlights in the series
worth watching just for this moment IMO, but you can read the entire saga in an hour or two, so I'd do that if you're impatient.
Shit like this is why you should read the manga

Best i could find, too bad that its only up until the gotenks vs buu fight
A solid 6/10 for this saga
The early saiyaman high school stuff with gohan was 10/10 until the tournament, that stuff with yamcha, bulma, roshi, etc looking for the dragon balls was also very fun and a good chance to give them some spotlight, later on i think it drag out too much after super buu appears and the the character's decisions getting very convenient and dumb in some cases.
>Kid buu arc
I spotted the burger
I didn't like it, the negatives felt like they outweigh the positives.
>Another artificially-created villain
>Actually good payoff wasted on a fat goof
>the only way to get stronger to beat him is by magic rituals or fusion
>introduce SSJ3 just for it to job
>complete tonal whiplash
>the direction kept changing so much it's as if Toriyama could not make up his mind on what to do
>We get Vegeta vs. Goku rematch only for it to be cheapened by the reveal of SSJ3
>Couldn't get anyone to really care with all the death and destruction because the Dragon Balls exist and will inevitably save the day
What I did like:
>Vegeta got a bit more character development
>SSJ3 transformation scene on its own was awesome, combined with the Faulconer music
>Mr. Satan was actually useful
Pretty fun, it was like a perfect mix of early Dragon Ball humour and later Dragon Ball Z drama.
It took a nosedive as soon as Goku shoved his face back into the picture. All of Gohan's plotlines get cut off, Piccolo gets castrated by Kaiofuck.
