The same sort of thing goes on with teachers in Texas; if you teach in this state, you're legally barred from collecting Social Security once you retire. You have to pay into (and draw from) a special Texas Education Foundation retirement account.
I really don't care, though. Public school teachers are subhuman.

In Illinois, teachers can choose to collect either their pension or social security, but not both. They pay into both though.

I taught for one year in Minnesota after college. Years later they sent me a postcard telling me I had money I didn't know about in my teachers retirement account. I have thousands of dollars in that account guaranteed 4% interest as long as it's there. That seems like a pretty good deal to me.
Also, one afternoon when I was teaching my principal emailed me letting me know I had to submit some kind of form so I could get a bonus for my students performance. I spent ten minutes making up numbers, backdating them, submitted them, and got a check for $2400 the next week. This all happened the year after the district had to pay a fine of $250k to the state because they couldn't set a budget by the deadline. Schools and teachers are retarded.
