Yoru wa Mijikashi, Aruke yo Otome

Just finished the movie. What did you guys think of it?

I thought it was a bit too similar to Tatami Galaxy. Similar to Tatami, the first half to three quarters of the film was pretty dull (outside of the theater scenes) but comes into its own in the final act. It rehashes a lot of themes and characterizations from TG, and thus doesn't feel very original. Its also EXTREMELY blunt with its themes, literally spelling it out to the viewer when it would have been just fine if they didn't explain the cold or the books or whatever.

But still, the theme of coincidences turning into real connections with people was really refreshing and the last part of the film was excellent. I'd give it an 8/10

> making analytical marks instead of experiencing the warm night wind

Why would you watch it anyway?

Because its a thematically dense film. I like thematically dense media and picking it apart.

Asian college kids on campus were doing this stupid meme dance thing everywhere. That's how I find out about this movie. And that's the only thing that stuck to my head.

It wasn't subtle at all and it was reiterative, but it was still a great movie and the best anime I've seen this year. Guerilla Theatre was fucking great.

>the first half to three quarters of the film was pretty dull (outside of the theater scenes)
>Dance of the Sophists
>Otome rampaging around calling out Rihaku
>Book fair, hotpot contest
I don't think there was a dull moment. Even in the bar/drinking scenes toward the start, there were so many instances of expressive animation that I was never bored.

It was pretty sweet

>the first half to three quarters of the film was pretty dull

If you weren't having a blast in Pontocho and seeing a particular author's take on what enjoying life looks like, well I guess that's alright.

I wish the flash parts weren't so damn obvious.

How sophisticated.

This. The Spring portion felt like a glorious nostalgia trip through comfy Kyoto nightlife.

But its literally the same thing in Tatami. I've already seen it.
Hell, I'm reading The Tatami Kingdom Records (or whatever it is in English) so this is like the third time I've experienced it.

>the first half to three quarters of the film was pretty dull
Strong disagree.

It looks fine. Especially when you compare it to garbage western animation that uses Flash.

>dude penis joke lmao

Outside of a few scenes it worked pretty well. This art style is tailor made for it. I expect to be more out off by Lu, the trailers were garish

>penis joke
More like child molester joke

>child molester joke
Actually that was a mistranslation IIRC. Ozu said he was bullying him, not molesting him.

Otome > Akashi

Then why would these background characters say "kimochi warui" in response to little Ozu's cry?
Bullying makes no sense.

Last part was weakest since male protagonist was boring throughout the movie. Honestly she should have rejected him.

Watching the scene again, Ozu did say いたずら in regards to the price tag stealing but in context it looks like he made Ozu put ice cream on his dick, so I could see where the molesting line came from.
A little more literally, its more like Ozu said "He made me do it!" but left what "it" was out.

I'd take either in a second

>you will never have a rose-colored campus life with a raven haired beauty in Kyoto

>Honestly she should have rejected him.

Why do you think this?

How can a girl be so cute?

It was great, though TG is still better.

The feeling was mutual right from the beginning.

2deep4u?

>Its also EXTREMELY blunt with its themes, literally spelling it out to the viewer when it would have been just fine if they didn't explain the cold or the books or whatever.
I don't think it was so much that it was blunt, but that the characters themselves were struggling with and discussing the themes.

>but that the characters themselves were struggling with and discussing the themes

I felt like that was part of the fun since the entire movie was essentially rhetoric.

quite unfair to criticize a sequel for being similar to the original work

There's was also the council in the male protag's head that was clearly an analogy to negative thinking. A few times they directly state it too, and the cowboys even say they represent his instincts. Then you have all the walls closing in around him and simultaneously shattering. The whole thing was pretty blunt. I just think it could afford to be just a little more subtle as a whole

>the entire movie was essentially rhetoric.
I like that idea. One of the major themes of the movie is to stop overthinking shit and go for it, while the movie itself being an example of rhetoric is pottery.

>One of the major themes of the movie is to stop overthinking shit and go for it
So the same as Tatami Galaxy?

>So the same as Tatami Galaxy?
Yeah, sort of. Both are pretty anti-idealist and against searching for that "perfect" girl or "perfect" rose-colored campus life. Both Don Underwear and Rihaku kind of encompass that. This movie focuses on coincidences more than simply enjoying life like TG did though (despite the endings being pretty similar).

>The night is short. Walk on, young girl.

bravo yuasa

I don't think there's any need for more subtlety though. Did the council scene ever even directly state that it was an internal process except through references to keeping her out and locking up? Explaining Johnny seems like a decent enough thing to do in case someone hasn't been exposed to him through Tatami Galaxy. Sure, it's easy enough to figure out he represents impulsive sexual drive, but there's also no reason to hide that from the audience. Subtlety for the sake of subtlety doesn't make something better.

Difference is Tatami is focused on the perspective of one character while Night is Short gives focus to the thoughts and wavelength of everyone.

>while the movie itself being an example of rhetoric is pottery.

I agree, especially since most of the time people need to have the rhetoric presented to them multiple times in different formats before they finally understand and accept the core idea.

I legit teared up once this part came

Introspection scenes are always god tier

This one was especially great since it evolved into that fever nightmare.

Any sakugabooru user here ? which raw did you use ? somehow I can't cut / make clip using the encoder with AnimeLand's raw. ffmpage is up to date too. What's wrong ?

It was pretty fun. Though, while waiting for this and Yuasa's other movie Yoake Tsugeru Luu no Uta I was sure I would like Otome more but after seeing both Luu actually charmed me more. I was honestly expecting more from that musical scene animated by master Matsumoto Norio.

That whole part was great. "We've got some perveted stuff, sure but we also have....other things! Even beautiful things!" And locking out the libido? Hilarious.

> I expect to be more out off by Lu
Luu definitely has more of that "made in Flash" and often it looks pretty odd, especially some automated in-betweening but while watching the movie it kind of started feeling natural and I didn't mind it so much. In case of Luu the colour design and overall work with colours really helps accommodate that Flash weirdness. So I would say yeah it is more weird and prominent in Luu but don't be afraid of it.

everything almost done on flash, except few cuts that were re-touched like Ohira's
example ?

Ohira worked on this? I couldn't spot anything

He storyboarded the climax and top KA in it along with Norio.

Here if you didn't notice it.

Can we all agree that Guerrilla Theatre was the best part about the movie?

Get out of this thread now, you fucking plebeian. Namedropping Ohira without noticing his work gets you death sentence.

I bet you didn't even watch the Wanwa, because anyone who had wouldn't miss the style.

I've seen Wanwa probably a dozen times

...

>tfw ambushed

Best girl

Nope.

Go to a doctor then, you have memory problems.

Fuck you asshole

funny, I found it the most jarring scene in the film. really wished they would just get on with it quickly

Just finished. Cried at the end, I always fall for those tear jerkers tho it was not a sad crying, more like overwhelmed by the love story.
Yuasa never lets me down.
Higuchi and Hanuki OTP, love their relationship too.

>Depraved Director doesn't actually oppose the relationship between the Eccentric King and Princess Daruma
>he only opposes the practice of guerrilla theater
>he's still treated like the ultimate enemy
It's not fair, he did nothing wrong.

He was spying everyone and, unlike most people, the students didn't like a camera up their asses.
He had no consequences though, and even got new fans so yeah you could say that is not fair.

>you will never sat by the Kamogawa at night and share a drink with a raven-haired maiden

Is it tone-deaf to turn a memorial for the dead into a wild and rocking party?

Where is the picture from?
So what, the dead don't deserve a party now?

It's from the new Masaaki Yuasa movie, freshly-subtitled.

Nice, didn't notice that thread.
This has been good weekend for Yuasafags.

Lu had better animation, but I think I preferred Otome for pretty much every other aspect.
Both really nice films though.

Their relationship was weird. Was he a pedo? I'm sure Japanese audiences understand that he's not due to some nuance in their speech or cultural context about mermaid mythology, but Western audiences might have some concerns.

He was like 14, and she's clearly a mythical creature.

>she's clearly a mythical creature
Who looks and acts like a toddler.

I've never seen a toddler dance like that.

Just finished watching it and I absolutely loved it. I really like this kind of movies with happy endings. The artstyle, comedy, voice acting was pretty good and the message about enjoying life was the best.

She's a mythical creature.

>you will never sat by the Kamogawa at night and share a drink with a raven-haired maiden
Neither will most Japanese guys.

Contrary to what anime tells you, most Japanese maidens are raven-haired.

I'm not sure if that makes me feel better or worse.

I heard Pic related is similar to this movies. How similar? I noticed the main characters look practically the same. Is the plot a love story too?

Do I think it's the greatest thing ever? Nah. There are plenty of problems, primarily editing.

Do I think it's good and worth watching? Yes. Probably the best animated movie I've seen this year, or at the very least the most inventive and most willing to take risks. Haven't seen the Mermaid film yet, so that could change.

In terms of the Yuasa canon it's in the middle of the pack.

Just watch it. If you liked one then you'll enjoy the other and regret nothing.

Same type of story, shy characters who can't admit their feelings to each other in a world that mixes realism with surrealism, but a different gimmick is what prompts the character growth.

The MC was trash.

He's not the MC.

No one who uses the term "MC" has ever said anything worthwhile, prove me wrong

The Flash look definitely worked better here than it did in Lu, but it was still a nice movie. Liked the heavy use of music in both. Were the songs in Lu original?

.

It wasn't really in the subs but I liked the wordplay and puns. The word kaze can be either "wind" or "a cold/sickness". And the pun around koi as in the fish and the word for love. So getting hit over the head with a carp or hit over the head with "love"

I caught the koi one but not the kaze. Neat.

>The word kaze can be either "wind" or "a cold/sickness"
See? This explains a lot of the scene.

The kaze one, when does that happen?

You know, when it's really windy and everyone has a cold.

Did parts of the guerrilla theater remind anybody else of Queen?

I loved it. Yuasa and Morimi are a match made in heaven.

.

Stop that. You might as well let it die if you don't have anything to contribute.

it reminded me of Gosenzo-sama babanzai

You might as well die, since you have nothing to contribute to society.

> Western audiences

Please don't extend your pathetic witch hunts to the whole “West”.
