It could be an attempt to bring new regulations and censorship to the internet, that seems most likely to me. Zuckersperg was probably betting on being able to manipulate peoples' thoughts by manipulating social media, but since it failed to get shillary elected they go into plan B which is turning the internet into China style.

Steve Bannon got a firm to purchase user data from Facebook to help Trump's campaign. Despite every other political entity and corporation in America doing the same, now they all have to act shocked and confused like this is some unbelievably criminal thing that Trump has done.

Interesting thing is that neither Trump, Bannon or Cambridge Analytics are the targets of their ire.
The underlying complaint is that Zuckerberg's dataist ideology of developing algorithms able to anticipate and predicate human behavior better than free will is being used against the establishment's will.
The Democrats style themselves as a "technocratic" leadership, while ironically possessing little to no education in scientific fields. Most of their leaders are educated in sociology or business administration. The idea of something like Facebook to provide them with data-driven information to better triangulate voters, like what Bannon did, as well as consensus building and for population management is extremely appealing. It is their highest ideals put into concrete form.
The idea that it would work against and not for their interests however is deeply terrifying from their perspective and must be stopped at all costs.
