Most old school airports that grew from the world war 2 era have this kind of design as the planes were quite small at this time so didn't need massive runways and they didn't really have airport terminals (just tents and shacks) so they maximized the runways and had one big tower in the middle of the runways.
Modern airports have big runways for jumbo jets and they also have airport terminals to maximize their profit margin so have a completely different design.
