I've personally overheard conversations like this, dating back to 2004ish, where box office incentive is the justification for using gun imagery. Spielberg removed all guns from an edit of ET, and this was supposed to be the original industry-wide catalyst, but it backfired. Now the Parkland kids are a pop culture phenom (their movie is being announced in the next month, rights are being bidded on rn in HUGE deal) and Hollywood is making their power move, with Black Panther's succes and MeToo providing bandwagon momentum.
Disney and Bob Iger have wanted to remove guns for a long time, due also to upcoming mandates in China, where only government propaganda movies will feature permitted gun violence by 2020. The next step is to pressure theaters to join in, by giving automatic R-ratings to any PG13 movie with "gun violence," and to essentially ghettoize these productions by denying them tax incentives unless they comply. I'm not sure how this affects Deadpool's future at Disney, it's probably being handled as a profitable outlier since X-Force will make a fortune. All of this was planned anticipating a Hillary Clinton victory.
