Churchchill literally had to suck FDRs polio dick to get us to come into the war. One of the things FDR wanted in exchange was for the British empire to relieve its colonies.
The colonial empire was weird, in that the colonies were profitable things to keep before the war, and then after the war there was no value in clinging to them anymore and doing so would just bleed money.
