Saudi Arabia has said it needs nuclear power to move away from burning crude oil to generate electricity and to diversify its economy. Earlier this month, its cabinet approved a national policy program that limits nuclear activities to peaceful purposes.

Perry hopes Saudi Arabia will buy nuclear power technology from US companies, including Westinghouse, which went into Chapter 11 bankruptcy this year and abandoned plans to build two advanced AP1000 reactors in the United States.

The Turkish government has decided to lift the ban on international flights to Iraqi Kurdistan, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said Friday.

“We had closed down our airspace following northern Iraq’s referendum. We are opening our airspace as of today,” Yildirim told reporters as quoted by the Daily Sabah newspaper.

Turkey imposed a ban on the international flights to and from the Iraqi Kurdistan as a response to the independence referendum in the region on September 25, viewed both by Baghdad and Ankara as illegal.

Following the vote, Iraq imposed sanctions on the Kurdish regional government, namely restricted banking operations, closed border crossings and banned international flights to and from the region.

In late January, local media reported that Iraqi Kurdistan’s government had agreed with an Iraqi federal delegation to transfer the autonomy’s airports to the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority, which was one of Baghdad’s main conditions for the resumption of flights to and from Kurdistan. On March 13, the Iraqi government lifted the ban on international flights to the autonomous region.

BEIRUT, LEBANON (4:10 P.M.) – With Faylaq Al-Rahman’s latest agreement to surrender their last positions in the East Ghouta to the Syrian government today, Jaysh Al-Islam remains the last militant group in this region.

According to a military source in Damascus, Jaysh Al-Islam has repeatedly refused to surrender Douma to the government and vowed to keep fighting, despite the overwhelming odds against them.

The source added that Faylaq Al-Rahman and Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham maintain close relationships with Turkey, which is one of the primary parties that helped negotiate a peaceful settlement with Russia and the government.

However, unlike the groups allied with Turkey, Jaysh Al-Islam is Saudi-backed and relies on town elders to negotiate with the government and their Russian counterparts in Damascus.

This has proven to be an obstacle for the Russians and Syrian government, as they do not have another powerful party to pressure Jaysh Al-Islam to accept an agreement.

The Syrian Army’s High Command has already committed the troops needed to capture Douma, but a battle for a town this large will be incredibly costly for all parties involved.

Knowing that it wont be easy to capture, the Syrian government and their Russian counterparts are attempting to sway Jaysh Al-Islam to accept a reconciliation agreement in Douma that would have them remain in the town, but without heavy arms.

While this differs from the Faylaq Al-Rahman agreement, Jaysh Al-Islam is also not embedded with Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham, which makes reconciliation much more appealing.

Nearly 170,000 people have fled after a Turkish-led assault on the Kurdish-majority Syrian city of Afrin, the UN said Friday. “The estimate now is 167,000 people have been displaced by hostilities in Afrin district,” Jens Laerke, spokesman for the UN humanitarian agency, said in Geneva. He added most of those who had left had gone to nearby Tal Rifaat. According to Laerke, between 50,000 and 70,000 civilians are estimated to remain inside Afrin. The World Health Organization (WHO) said it had deployed mobile medical clinics and health supplies to areas hosting those displaced, AFP reports.
