Look further into the problems faced by the Soviet Union. That country's fundamental contradiction was that even though they nationalized private property, all other aspects of capitalist economy were still in place. There was still wage labor and a market economy and the brutal expectations of capital. Many atrocities of the Soviet Union were directly capitalistic -- Soviet officials demanded more grain to sell to urban workers and to the West, and farmers who could not meet these quotas were punished just as they would have been by feudal masters a century earlier.
Rather than finding themselves masters of their own destiny, workers who took part in this half-complete socialist transformation instead found their boss, their grocer, and their money-lender replaced by the anonymous state. You guys think "not real socialism" is a meme, but the economic realities of the Soviet Union do not resemble the post-capitalist societies described by Marx and Engels. Instead, the Soviet economy kept intact 90% of the aspects of capitalism and inherited all of its problems.
You're correct that price controls are an inefficient and potentially dangerous method of making necessary goods more available. It is incredibly difficult for a nation to reconcile the interests of the working class with the interests of merchants, especially without advanced computing technology. What communism entails is not price controls and it's not even nationalization. Communism is the complete abolition of monetary exchange and the production of commodities -- goods produced for sale rather than direct use. If Venezuela was a communist society, rather than buying their food from private grocery stores whose prices change daily with every state decree, farm-to-table supply lines would allow all Venezuelans fresh food regardless of how much money they have. Price has become irrelevant and the middlemen vanish.
