Author fought with fans of the series because a fuck load of fans liked Charlotte a lot.

They ran a poll for favorite characters and Charlotte trounced everyone in polls. She always had at around 60%-70% of the total votes. The nearest character in the poll would be Houki, at fucking 10%-15% of the votes. So when these polls happened. Author got mad, took it out on the illustrator as well. Illustrator quit at around volume 7.

Also he suddenly had a massive fallout with the publisher as well. I think it was about royalties or something.

Basically he got big-headed. Now look, it's nowhere.

I'll be honest with you: I don't like Charlotte too much. In terms of Best Girl rankings I'd put her squarely in the middle because of how generic she is. But why sperg out over a lot of readers liking this girl? Even if it isn't his favorite girl, why the fuck would he throw such a hissyfit over it? Even if we assume he doesn't like this fact, all this shows is that he made Charlotte "too likeable" and his favorite girl (Fan Rin, I've heard?) not likeable enough. Give Charlotte a few flaws, put more focus on Fan Rin et voilà (or however the Chinese say it).

The solution to that is painfully simple though: make her less abusive, redeem her as a character. A lot of people like Chifuyu and Tatenashi because the later never purposely hurts Ichika (with the exception being that one sparring match they had but that's a fucking sparring match) and Chifuyu only hurts Ichika in the context of disciplining him as her teacher.
