All you need is belief and determination. How you convince yourself that you believe doesn't even fucking matter. Some need rituals and to play the enochian hokey pokey, some don't.
A much, much better place starting place is with Initiation into Hermetics by Franz Bardon or the Psychonaut's Field Guide by Bluefluke.
Both of them introduce you to different systems and don't lead you into dangerous belief systems (if you go progressively and don't jump around like a madman) and provide a healthier and much safer starting point.
