Their economy is rather stagnant, but the main reason is unsustainable pension/retirement spending. 60% of Japan's government spending goes to people that no longer work.

They have an ideal population for playing the long game on these things so unlike the west they do not need to resort to pump and dump strategies to keep things afloat lest there be riots in the street and roving pickups full of rednecks looking to shake soyboys fleeing the cities down for cases of PBR and their tight buttholes. Barring a successful invasion by China Japan will still exist in a century, the same will likely not be true for the United States, Canada, and possible some countries in Europe or Australia.
