I prefer HS or CR because the vulgarity turns me off and I don't understand all of English slang

Non-hs subs are more likely to have issues that detract from the viewing experience.

HS is professionally done, the rest is often poppycock.

I think "official" subs (HS rips) are good enough most of the time. The fansubbers that are left should focus on subbing blurays and OVAs.
Subbing things already released by HS is a waste of work.

Nii-sama is the best one active.
Coalgirls made a bunch of GOAT archive quality BD releases, then died.
HS/CR are the only option 90% of the time you're watching something current, but are really bad with anything that requires Japanese culture knowledge.
Asenshi is doing Children of the Whales when no one else is, and ESL-autist is adding honorifics which is nice.

For one, they embrace being called memesubs, just look at the banner on their website. Personally I've only been bothered by the RE Zero subs.

I prefer fansubs, but its not how it used to be, or at least I've lost track since the whole nyaa thing, it felt like the final straw then. Its kinda dumb to be so autistic about subs when Im decent enough at moon to understand what they are saying even with bad subs

My favorite fansub groups are HorribleSubs, Deadfish and Coalgirls.

Nii-sama is doing great work, I hope they last.

I watch fansubs when possible (like commie/ddy/whatever) because it's often more fun and personal. I like the twists they add to the subs, either by "memesubbing" or by actually stylizing their subs, making the text fit the visuals more. And often enough even though the groups "memesubs", the message of the anime director is clear, at least for me, since I understand enough japanese to get the picture.

I prefer fansubs over HS rips considering they are essentially the same at this point.
Only difference is that fansubs translate the OP/ED, adds chapters, lightly typeset signs and generally has a better encode.
I don't care about waiting a few hours/days and missing out on discussion.

There is also no discussion to be missed, I love Houseki and would want a proper encode from a good source for it, but even with HS I stay clear of the threads because they are cancer cesspools and that is not a unique phenomenon.

HS doesn't sub, they rip directly off of CR.

No, that wasn't the most recent episode. It also wasn't explaining the joke. That fight is already over because in the end Nii-sama and CR are the only shows and Nii-sama did that scene objectively better than CR, even if there was a better way.

They didn't explain the joke, adding a note about boku being masculine is not giving any information than the original audio does. CR also didn't explain the joke, they just took it out.

Back to the actual discussion about the most recent episode, the TL note wasn't for a joke, it was for a cultural thing.

So you want to viewer to think about why the I is italicized. Since it is mostly used for empathis I would probably never think about it that way but let's just assume the only options are italicized for empathis and italicized to hint at japanese pronouns with a probability of 50/50.
You want the viewer to guess what you mean by it or assess the situation which takes time, then think about applying their knowledge of japanese pronouns and by the time they reach that step the character probably already said the pronoun, meaning the viewer would have to remember what the character said while running through step one and two. And all that in the span of one sub line because you had to do mental gymnastics to avoid putting an extra line it to explain the situation.

Here is also an example that did it very good.

I honestly can't imagine the italics being a good choice because so many old subs italicize certain things for no reason, usually honorifics. CR italicizes a crazy amount of shit for no reason so those viewers wouldn't even notice the I.

No, draw attention without explaining the joke. The viewer's knowledge of Japanese is never a factor.

I am neither that guy nor have I watched the episode in question, but from what I understand a trap used boku and the rest was probably suprised.
So how is it a spoiler if you tell the audience that does not know what boku means in this scene, that he is telling them about his dick?
