is it a trap, though

I like them when they're informative, but not when the translator is trying to be funny

...

this

Informative translator notes = good
Useless translator commentary = bad

Why do we never get OP mcs who just rape the psychopathy out of samendamen like this?

>when translator notes are just the editor reacting to shit on the page or story

I hate obtrusive translator notes. They should be put on a separate page after the end of the chapter so that you don't get line after line of nonsense and stupid jokes distracting from the content of the chapter.

Fucking cringe.

TL notes are only good for explaining inside jokes, that's it. Manga isn't meant to be read with some random tryhard autistic commentary written by a retard with shit tier humor on the side.

Translator here, I try not to underestimate the reader's intelligence, but sometimes TL notes are necessary when it's something they have no way of knowing, or can't be expected to know. Like meaningful changes in first person pronouns, or obscure references.

when it's in order to make useless commentary or beg for money it's a no no
when it's in order to explain something or make fun of another translator then yeah

Informative notes > Translator trying to be funny > "My mom is sick, give me shekels" > Whitepod's nigger-tier humor

If you gave his mom shekels then he'd stop asking.

>If you gave his mom shekels then he'd stop asking.
TL: I bet 10 bucks that's a trap.

Wait a minute these had a crossover?

Remember the "ghetto gangsta*" notes from Isekai maou's rogue typesetter?
Yeah, not like that.

Whiteoid was cancer, I can't believe there were people stupid enough to like his shitty notes.

>ghetto gangsta notes
What?

yesterday, you can read it on batoto and usuals

>sfx: loli struggling to poop quietly

>My mom has been sick for a very long time and I'm forced to stay home and take care of her. Please donate.

go find Isekai maou to shoukan shoujo dorei majutsu

and see how not to add notes.

I would take a million translator notes if TL group pages were removed in exchange, specially the ones that use pages from the fucking manga with the text changed to ask for money or some shit.

TL here, how do you guys feel about SFX translations?

Remember when a scanlator group added "fuck you online reader sites" watermarks over multiple chapters of the breaker new waves?

I'm fine with them.

Pointless waste of time.

With any kind of SFX? From your literal onomatopoeia like *bang*, *crash*, etc. to shit like *open* or *mess* (*mess* being a SFX for like a messy room)

Remember when a group got mad about people using their scanlations and plastered huge watermarks that made it imposible to read?

situationally dependent
the obvious ones usually don't need it occasionally they add to the context which is probably the right time to translate them

I love them.

Any kind of SFX. I personally think SFX themselves are pointless but since they are there I might as well know what the fuck they mean.

I really appreciate when translator notes actually help with language and culture specific things. Theres a lot of clever stuff that goes over our heads without your help.

But seeing lolsorandumb notes especially during serious moments makes my blood boil

If there are words written on it in Japanese, then they should be translated. That's literally the translators job.

I like when they're for cultural things that aren't immediately obvious through context, when they're kept brief. In fact I prefer to the occasional tl-note over in-your-face localization that changes the idea of a scene to something else or paints over cultural references with something unfitting for the setting

Retarded editors trying to be funny in the margins of manga is still cancer-tier though

Not a big fan, but not completely against ether.

I was glad that that TL note was there to translate the picture as well.

That's the only kind I put in my translations, any personal comments I might have usually go in the comment section of whatever platform I upload it to.

the official grand blue translations have eschewed notes which must make for confusion given the likely target readershp

OP is just mad because he lost 15 bucks.

kek

Minami-ke's TL notes taught me a surprising amount about japanese culture and food

I like them when the translator is trying to be informative but is accidentally funny
>Character's name is Meme
>TL note: Meme is pronounced "Meh-meh"
I can't find the page but it was a riot.

No wait, he wrote "pronounced "May-may""
Which is even more beautiful

cannot find source using iqdb or saucenao.
please give name

same with Chikyuu no Houkago. Bonus: kept mostly to the end notes.

very dependent on the motivations of the translator.

Look on LH scans it's the isekai about the sleepy vampire loli.

As long as you don't overlay the translated SFX over the original SFX, I'm fine with them.

>____
>__ _____ _______ ____ ________.

/thread

only when they're TL note annotations outside the panels

>SFX:Rumble of scientific triumph
They're alright.

I still don't know how a turtle sounds

>his

Wasn't it a she though?

>reading porn
>TL Note: holy shit that's a lot of cum

The only ````jokes'''' a scanlator group should make should be in their credits page. Like Rapeman.

Read this and rage.

I don't think I'll ever collab with them again.

This.
If it's obvious from the picture what the character is doing, then leave it alone. e.g. niyari (grin)

But some of them are absolutely necessary like the hiso hiso (whisper) ones.

sorry, I meant boso (also whisper). Sometimes fuckers don't translate/typeset that sfx and it makes it seem like the character said it out loud.

Here's one that stuck out in my mind
>XDDDD

What notes?
