Everywhere I go in America, I keep hearing stuff about Putin being a dictator, megalomaniac, etc. I read stuff on how he needs to be punished for his actions and cares for nothing but power. Is this just liberal propaganda?
So I ask you, Russianons: Is Putin as bad as the west say he is, or is he doing his job that he should be doing as Russian President: Protecting and pursuing the interests of the Russian people? Please explain your answers as the more elaboration, the better.

I’m an American and more or less uneducated on the matter but my dad went to Harvard and studied national security and when we talk about Putin he tells me he is a realist leader that favors the expansion of Russian power and dominance, especially in Eastern Europe, rather than focusing of Russian individuals. Although, Russian individuals might be better off with this strategy.
I understand this is very brief and probably up to some debate but I think this is a decent gist of Putin.
Also I don’t think Putin has done anything that Hillary or corrupt politicians in the west haven’t or would think about doing. And considering It is her kind of ideology and its cronies that criticize putin I find most of it to be just hypocritical propaganda dribble.

Just watch his interviews, his speeches, preferably from sources like RT (though even official live translations sometimes make mistakes or don't perfectly translate).
There's a 4-hour interview with Oliver Stone that you can get from torrents. You will understand his mind better. But this takes some effort and attention span or interest that most people don't seem to have.

I am in agreement with this. Remember, there was no Russian issue until the US and it's lackeys got involved in Ukraine. Crimea is not about it being the HQ of USSR's and Russia's Black Sea Fleet.

Basically, if Putin wouldn't make the move, there would be NATO's ships there, not Russia's. In 2007, they told Russia to fuck off from Crimea with its Black Sea Fleet by 2017 that Russia was leasing. In 2010, somewhat pro-Russian leader came to power and he let Russia lease the territory for 20+ years in exchange for gas discount, as well as Russia being allowed to have up to 25k soldiers in Crimea (don't know about the amount before that). The new pro-west gov that came to power after the coup in 2014 would annul the deal no doubt and Crimea would have been lost.
Either way, Crimea wouldn't have been reunited with Russia so soon if it wasn't for west's coup.
I also don't agree that there wasn't "Russian issue" before Crimea. There was. There was Magnitsky act of 2012 (and the law that it replaced). There were Pussy Riot on CNN every day. In 2013 is where it got hot: Snowden, Obama's red line in Syria (chem attack provocation; Russia defending Syria politically and who knows how behind political curtains), law against LGBT propaganda among minors (although this wasn't really an issue for the west, just a pretext...
