Gun control in the US usually fails because people already have guns and feel entitled to them. If you want to ban guns at all it will piss off some people who already own and feel entitled to own guns. Piss off enough and you have a shitty little militia willing to use force against you.
That hasn't proven to be a big enough problem in the past to some gun control measures. At this point there aren't many more small bans that can be made without pissing off more and more people.
The 2nd amendment still prevents gun control as well. As long as it stands it will be an issue preventing absolute disarmament. I cannot see there being the political will to amend the constitution in any way that might conflict with the 2nd.
