as a boss it's your job to teach him. Train him to be able to do your job.
You have an obligation to guide him to the best of your ability.
Document EVERYTHING
If he can step up and do a damn good job, you are set. If he fucks up, you have documents showing why he has to go.

What's wrong with that? That's nice and polite. You are supposed to be respectful to your elders. That's like XIX century tier behaviour.

It generally is, and in a formal environment it's permissible, but saying it to your co-workers or supervisor or something just because they're older than you is a bit too deferring - it makes people uncomfortable or makes you come across as either too formal or a pussy.

Same thing with constantly saying sorry, you think it reassures people that you have good intentions, but all it does is signal to people that you're a pussy. Only say sorry if the person is genuinely upset and you genuinely give a fuck

Also a new employee in the workplace should strive to do things on their own as soon as possible, being trained by another coworker doesn't mean the responsibilities of that coworker just disappear, you've gotta get with the program and start carrying your load ASAP or you're gonna be hated anywhere you go

If they're older what's wrong with calling them sir? Why would you not? Say a coworker is like 60 and you're like 25. "Hey Barry, old chap, how's it goin'", that's how you're supposed to talk to them? That's just disrespectful.

Looks like you've got a problem with millennials there son.

sir/sorry is compensation for being insecure in a new environment. It's actual beta behavior when encountering a new pact to not distress the new group you're in.
Millennials in general have never had to do anything on their own. and were always taken by hand
They don't see the co-worker who trains them has responsibilities because they feel like they are there to help the millennial. They rely heavily on them and will never learn the work they have to do unless you force them to do it all by themself

Brody Collins
Brody Collins

Hey there Barry, how are you today?
Ah that's cool, yeah the game was good

I never call older co-workers sir unless it's in jest. I treat them like normal people, although I'm generally polite and friendly. Old people at work love shooting the shit with me and talking about their hobbies/families and asking me about girls, they don't want their fellow co-worker calling them sir and acting like an awkward fuck around them all the time and fucking up in the workplace all day.

Also, NEVER call older women in the workplace 'mam. But do be polite and ask them about how their day's going and be sympathetic to their bitching - older, established women at work are usually influential, have beta orbiters in management and can be excellent work friends for a young guy.

TRAIN HIM, OP. IT'S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.

IF YOU CAN SEE WHERE HE FALLS SHORT, THEN IT IS YOUR OBLIGATION AS A WHITE MAN TO GET HIM IN LINE.

START SETTING HIM GOALS FOR IMPROVEMENT. PRAISE HIS SUCCESSES AND CRITICIZE HIS FAILURES.

Ever notice how Sup Forums always criticizes others, but never actually tries to help anyone be better? The only way things get better is if men make other men better.

I'm 38 and I hate working with millenials. You kids have to literally be told exactly how to do your job, you need your hand held for the smallest tasks that includes so called "college educated" kids, you cannot even wipe your ass on your own without looking up a tutorial on your phone. All of you are so soft and beta, even the so called chad looking ones you act super shy and like bitches around older co workers. You're meek and mild, weak as hell. I now understand why women your age don't want to fuck 90% of you lol. But I do believe you'll learn, once you enter your 30's you'll man up but in my generation that happened at 18 - 20.

Where do you live? I live in california and work in tech, most people have the sort of casual but polite vibe I'm describing. Saying sir/mam all the time would definitely be abnormal at my company, it really depends on the context, though.

In OP's response, the guy just comes across as a bumbling beta fuck who's insecure and so nervous that he's being overly deferential and is constantly screwing up, so the whole sir thing to me is a symptom of his insecurity/nervousness rather than something that on its own is a big deal.

I live in the north-west of Russia and work in IT. We don't really have any equivalent for sir though, you can say "you" in plural when addressing them (kinda hard to describe). That's considered respectful, but you basically address in that way everyone who is not your close friend or isn't much younger.
