Referencing is nowhere nearly as bad as tracing, the later is recommended when practicing even. If you don't have a character sheet, just use screenshots/manga panels?

Yes referencing is recommended but that isn't referencing. That is eyeballing a character sheet of more bluntly put tracing with your eyes.
That is why I asked, if he had nothing to look at after drawing "from" reference, has he learned any techniques to reproduce it accurately?

Windows Vista Paint onwards has had stabilisers. I hate it because it corrects to what it thinks you wanted, and if you're using a tablet and being precise, eg. when you're doing pixel work, it fucks it up.
