Lectins are proteins found in about 30% of your food. Since plants can't get up and walk away from predators, the plants produce "lectin" as a defense mechanism. For example, if a cricket were to take a bite out of a tomato, it will die. But, if someone takes a bite out of a tomato, they won't die. However, if someone doesn't carry the right amount of enzymes for absorption of lectin, then one would be susceptible to a host of issues. These proteins play various roles in normal physiological functions, but they have also been implicated in causing cavities, inflammatory bowel syndrome and celiac disease. Certain small amounts are tolerable but the fact is, humans don't have enough of the necessary enzymes and micro-biota to break down lectin. The main point that I'm trying to make here is that the "gluten-free" and "non-GMO" craze is blown way out of proportion. The fact is, more people suffer food poisoning from under-cooked beans more than any other food. The Russians even made a poison from Lectin of the castor bean known as, "Ricin" Now, that being said, castor beans have an extremely high level of lectins, but they're also in much of your food. Compare the related picture to what you are eating. Are you eating frequently consuming foods high in lectins?
tl:dr the scientific reason why being a soyboy is bad (among other things) at least look at the damn picture, you lazy bastard
There's been very little research done on this. It's an interesting idea and correlates to the drastic increase in IBS in industrialized countries over the last 30 years despite apparent improvement in diet through an increase in the consumption of fruits and vegetables and meat consumption.
Wyatt Baker
That's precisely why I brought it up. No one is really talking about food here.
Gabriel Ortiz
There's a similar idea going around about salicylates which are present in similar foods. Salicylic acid is the active ingredient in ibuprofen and is known to cause severe GI problems in large doses.
This is another thing that has basically no research on it. It's been criticized because you need to take a shit ton of ibuprofen to cause GI problems and even in a high salicylate diet, you're probably getting less than the equivalent of 100mg of ibuprofen. But there is also some evidence that salicylates stay in the body for a long time and could build up over time. It could explain weird incidences of patients with unexplained IBS symptoms that go away for no apparent reason.
Dylan James
It would also correlate with successes with the Paleo Diet. Typically, those dieters will not be consuming large quantities of lectin.
Charles Reyes
Why is Sup Forums so obsessed with fad diets? Is this board the Gwyneth Paltrow of Sup Forums?
Easton Cook
Everyone is obsessed with fad diets. Nutrition is really complicated. Doctors sincerely do not understand it. To give you an idea, the most effective treatment for IBS is dietary change. This is a disease that has been known since at least the 1960's. Do you know what the government and boards of experts recommended as a therapeutic diet for IBS until less than 5 years ago? >"Bland and high-fiber." That's it. Not avoid specific kinds of food, not eat specific kinds of food, just eat whatever but don't put any spices on it and make sure you also eat vegetables and fruits. That's it. They had no other ideas. Dieticians primary role in this approach was to suggest ways to make fruits and vegetables more appetizing and recommend non-spice flavorants.
There is a scientific diet for IBS now. It only exists because tenured professor in Australia had a hunch and access to equipment. It's called the FODMAP diet and his research found that a lot of tasty carbohydrates are actually hard to digest. So he tried having patients avoid them. Shocker, they had lessened symptoms. It works for any type of chronic digestive problem not just IBS for obvious reasons. His lab is the only one in the world researching it and most doctors still haven't even heard of it. So what are they recommending to patients with chronic GI problems? >"Bland diet with fruits and vegetables."
IBS is the most common chronic health condition in people under 40 now. It affects as many as 15% of adult in industrialized countries. >"Bland."
Zachary Watson
Checked FODMAP looks rather promising. I am going to read more on that.
Be careful with it. Don't rely on lists of approved and unapproved foods, because many low-fodmap foods still have a moderate amount and you can easily end up with a high-fodmap meal by accident. Google Patsy Catsos or buy her cookbook, it has a lot of good advice. There's also an excellent app for it made by Monash University, which is where they research this stuff.
Also, a lot of people end up being malnourished or losing weight unintentionally on it. I recommend making rice and meat your primary sources of calories, if you find that pretty much all fodmaps are giving you trouble. Most people learn that only certain fodmaps are bad for them, which is suspected to indicate that some chronic GI symptoms are caused by uncommon enzyme deficiencies.

Im intereted but the pic resolution is shit sry guy

Stop phoneposting, pleb.

Makes sense to me. Usually I get into trouble if I have more than one serving of dairy a day. So like, one glass of milk OR one serving of cottage cheese, but not both in one day. Otherwise, it will completely wreck me. When I didn't know I had an issue, I cleared out a classroom in high school with my stinkin' ass. It seems to me that a few of my family members could attribute their overweightedness to high-fodmap meals. Some of them are just total slugs. Thanks man, you are the true MVP

caster bean plant is well know to be poisonous.
Lucas Clark
Right. I was just pointing out in the OP that the ricin is essentially the concentrated version of this.
Angel Sanders
Ok, I understand . thanks for the clarification

The inflamatory response is starting to be linked genetically. Apparently, rh positives have a normal inflamation response that doesn't mix well with rh neg alleles. So when you mix the two species, you have a bunch of italian/english ladies with fibromyalgia. Its the same with lectin and aspirin - some of us can handle it, some cant. We can thank the production of immoglobin for this, autism, schizophrenia, etc etc etc.
Asher Kelly
You definitely have lactase deficiency, btw. You can buy lactase pills to correct it. Cheap and available at any drug store.
Tyler Harris
Wait a second
You mean to tell me, I can eat a pill and then be able to consume the dairy that I want? Damn. Where were you 4 years ago?
Oliver Morgan
Lectins are a dumb meme. It is only shilled by people who want to sell you lectin blocking pills. The vast majority of lectins are destroyed during the cooking process.
The health benefits from eating beans far outweigh any tiny effect from that.
Nathaniel Lee
Its called lactaid. Buy it over the counter - vanilla tastes like pudding - chew right before you eat dairy. Presto, you can eat pizza again.
Andrew Cooper
Other than their typical high-vitamin content, what are the health benefits of beans?
Brandon Roberts
regarding IBS, i was diagnosed many years ago, and after cutting out all kinds of foods with no results it was finally pinpointed as a reaction to stress, specifically adrenaline. in short, if i get very stressed, i get IBS. if say, i am up a high ladder and it lurches to the side, i get stomach cramps. damned idiopathic conditions.
Connor Sullivan
Sometimes I think stress is a culture bound syndrome, but then I remember it's also the easy answer to any difficult medical question, requiring no testing or treatment. Did your GP recommend propranolol/inderal? It blocks adrenaline, though using it for stress or anxiety is off-label.
Isaiah Cox
Does Dr. Gundry want me to buy Lectin-blocking pills? or something to that effect?
I wonder if he's in cahoots with someone.
Luke Price
>Salicylic acid is the active ingredient in ibuprofen Kill yourself
Blake Rivera
actually i took propranolol many years ago after suffering from post-orgasmic headaches. the doctor said 'we don't know why, but this might work' and after taking it for a few weeks i've never had the headaches again. as for the IBS, i had blood tests done during my attacks which showed increased adrenaline levels. i took steps to reduce the amount of stress in my life, and for a few years now i only get occasional symptoms.
Mason Wright
heh, you're right, i read that whole post and didn't pick up on that mistake.
Oliver Brooks
It is similar structurally and it has a similar mechanism of action. I understand the confusion.
>fermenting So that's why fermented soy is fine Now I get it, finally
Caleb Peterson
Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or 'Angry Bum' as I call it.
Andrew Gray
That's an encouraging story. It's nice to know some doctors really do diagnose stress and not just use it like insurance companies use co-pays.
Daniel White
Oh shoot, I always mix up ibuprofen and aspirin for some reason.
Josiah Jenkins
if it was pasteurized you're fucked raw sauerkraut works too
Jacob Hill
I think excess omega 6 and lack of omega 3 and antioxidants is a bigger deal
And I say this as someone who had a positive celiac blood test and tons of food allergies
Or would anyone happen to know if lectins are in the fiber of beans or something? Because I’ve been eating noodles made of beans which I think they stripped the fiber from, idk, but that shit makes me feel pretty good
Robert Powell
But I do feel better eating more starchy vegetables instead of grains but it’s not as big a deal as those fats can make
