If the dollars was pegged to a real item then we could all agree on what the minimum value of that dollar is. In the case of gold standard we would agree on how useful the pretty gold metal is that happens to be good for jewelery and industrial uses.
However, the monopoly money scheme we use with regards to the petrodollar and global currency reserve wouldn't work if we pegged it to an actual real world value. The value the US gets out of freely manipulating the dollars in circulation wouldn't be worth it if we had to have something of value behind what we print.
