The two are good, the first three episodes of the anime are more detailed in the manga and in general I like Tsukushi art better, but the anime is also really good, it comes down to what you prefer, but if possible read the manga and also watch the anime

Where does the anime stop and what was up with the dying twins in the death birthday chapter?

I don't really watch that much anime, but this was fucking gorgeously animated compared to the few other shows I watched.

The anime stops at chapter 26 when they head down to the 5th layer.
The curse is probably moving upward since the Abyss is nearing the end of it's 2000 year cycle and the same thing is starting to happen that killed all the praying skeletons on the currently first layer.
