I can't really see this series having a sad ending. Although I'm sure there will be a lot more suffering to overcome before we get to the end.

That's already been foreshadowed very strongly. If that happens to them, Shirogane won't just let her go. He'll stop at nothing to keep her or bring her back, and knowing Kaguya she'll do the same. That's likely to be the last big arc before their happy ending.
