What's the deal with KyoAni?
Why are they using so much blur and filters so egregiously as of late?

>Why do people have different art styles?
You must be mistaking direction with art style.
Remember when KyoAni was good?
youtube.com
nichishit was never good.
They forgot how to drew a dime after Hyouka
>tvraws vs funistream.jpg
Fixed.
Because chromatic abberation, heavy contrast and lens flares look cool apparently.
aesthetic
I could only imagine how much nicer this would look without those filters.
What does funi have to do with anything?
Fun things are fun.
As other user, in their defense of KyoAni's style said, it draws for a more professional picture than the competition. In the same way Makoto Shinkai does it, really. It gives a mood to the scene and creates a sense of high quality/dinamism to an animation that is already the highest mark in the TV industry. If I were a little more skeptical myself, I would say both (KyoAni and Shinkai) use it as a substitute for a well composed composition or cinematographic thought, as most big American publicists do with their posters. It's a formula, really, the KyoAni touch and so on.
The real discussion would be how a style of filmmaking (medium?) that literally creates colours from scratch and has total freedom with composition, as most of its masters have demonstrated time and time again (focus and lightning is another matter) benefits from such extreme colour post-processing. It feels like aping "proffesional" looking pictures and photography.
Shinkai has a better understanding of tone and contrast than any of the hacks working at KyoAni.
Unlike Kyoani, Shinkai actually DOES use post effects to set a tone, at most by applying some color correction or a sepia effect.
But KyoAni?
They're exaggerating it so much that the contrast is absolutely destroyed in all the shots.
Koe no Katachi and Tamako Love Story are absolutely well animated, but the filters, the bloom, every post effect applied to these two films ruined the quality of the production. The colors look bad, the sharpness of the drawings are reduced, the contrast is bad and the blur is absolutely unneeded.
I fully agree but I also believe pretending to be able to colour correct succesfully without having the masters is just absurd.
This is sad.
...
See
If you're talking about the webm, there's no color correction involved. It's a simple levels correction. There's already concept art that KyoAni themselves published, you just have to compare.
In all honesty, KyoAni has talented animators, but the post effects degrade the work so much that it can't really be ignored.
KyoAni needs to take anime to the next level and start making all their animation in 4K.
Where the magic happens
youtu.be
This as long as they go back to adapting slice of life manga and drop the LNshit/fujoshit.
Oh, shit, now that's a waste of someone's best efforts right there. What a disgrace. This modern overuse of shallow focus is just ridiculous (not in all films, though, but when used unilaterally it's even worse than DV). Years and years and years of ingeneers and directors applying how to make profundity with film and the added efforts with perspective in animation and now these trends come in.
Yeah, it's sophomoric at its very best. Good thing their shows are almost always pretty garbage.
FUCK THAT STUPID BIRD
Because they CAN. They have a talented and proffessional digital fx and post processing department for Finishing animation, while others dont.
So they routinely CAN and do use multitude of cinematic effects and methods be it - camera shake, focus, depth blur, proper dynamic lightning, perfect blending of high quality backgrounds and characters, chromatic abberation, lens effects etc.
The only reason other anime does not use it is that they cant afford it. Generic anime is cheap as fuck and 99% of studios have no knowhow/inhouse resources to do that, so when they do they have to pay to outrource it which is not cheap, nor resource effective.
Same reason why KyoAni shows generally have great detailed character shadows, while others dont. Because KyoAni can, while they cant.
Same reason why KyoAni has rich character animation while other have flapping mouths. Because KyoAni has resources and time for that, while others dont.
God smite me for videogame development reference, but people make games with shit graphics not because they want to or its style - but because they cant do better/not have resources to develop/buy engine and proffessionals to create the superb craphics.
If generic anime studio had resources and talent KyoAni had, in this particular case - an inhouse digital department, you`d see other anime using same methods as well all the time.
Also, KyoAni has GREAT 3D department too, its just you mostly dont notice it since its used not create full CGI scenes, but pretty much everywhere for scene composition perfectly blending backgrounds, lightning, 3d objects and textures and characters. So in a scene where you think its flat background with foreground character, is actually designed in 3D room with careful use of effects and 3d objects (Tamako is great example).
Remember when anyone on Sup Forums watched anything by Kyoani? Me neither.
Do wonder what the background artists feel when looking at this shitty blur on their works
...
Deep focus > shallow focus
Hyouka is so best
Focus > No Focus
Oh, don't dare use Ozu's work into this shit. He's one of the masters of composition, and submitted to no appeal to an image standard than his own. Making even the tiniest implicit comparison between him and almost anyone working in anime today should make you feel ashamed,
>ctrl f
>no k-on
Actual knowledge of focus as tools for determinate things>Focus as gimmicks to create a "better" image.
Greatest anime series of all time
When are we going to ban studio wars threads?
...
Do you suggest you have better knowledge of focus, than Yamada - a conceptualist director who draws her inspiration from a lot of sources and analizes them carefully implmenenting in subtitely level that would be over the head of 99% of anime watchers, or than Ishidate - a cinema fag whose whole passiong is cinema FX magic and technicalities of scene scene composition and tricking viewer perception?
Looks more like a Kyoani general
Come on, this thread is actually decent.
No. I was responding to the other user. I haven't studied any of their works as a whole to comment.
Your appeal to the director's authority (the worst kind of thing auteurist theory has brought after its initial meaning) to shut down commentaries is almost obscene though. I have studied my shit as well, even if for enjoyment. My question above () has come unanswered.
Influence means shit, being a "conceptualist director" means shit, most of what you said means shit without actually going "into" the works. Which is what you've done with the colours image and the post about "the do because they can", which is a pretty invalid argument within my framework.
I hope subbers will release two versions of VE episodes
The same day Sup Forums will ban console war threads
Nice appeal to authority.
You don't need to be a director to criticize someone's work.
The fact is, KyoAni's current culture of instagram filters is probably on par with the tumblr anime gifs we had to suffer through before webm came to save the day.
For that you would need to rerip the original rip (since they don't work with masters), making for an obviously worse image. Filter your own shit if you dislike originals.
>*ruins it in the movie*
Easy.
You can criticize all you want, its just no one is obliged to listen to your ignorant drivel.
Left is obviously better, same way the new Liz and Blue Bird artstyle is better than original Hibike.
>Left is obviously better
>Comparing shots for something other than the same shots
Also, right middle looks like hypersaturated vomit. Not going to defend that, since instead of giving mood and tonality to the image the whole left side looks like the lens is dirty.
Sorry, bad english.
>Not going to defend that, since instead of giving mood and tonality to the image the whole left side looks like the lens is dirty.
Should be replaced with: "Not going to defend the left side, since instead of giving mood and tonality to the image it just looks like the supposed lens is dirty.
Do you ever get tired of being called idiot?
Original Tamako had colorfool and cartoonish style, with animation and character look in tune of light hearted K-On and focus on sol comedy. Its style suited it and was intentional.
The movie on other hand, focuses on reminiscence of youth adolescence - a memory of feelings, both of the main heroines as well the past events. Its style is a lot more photorealistic, colors not cartoonish, background quality improved drastically and a lot more attention paid to specific scene compositions, lightning and mood as opposed to TV.
The theme of TV is colorful youth life. The theme of movie is reminiscence of adolescence. One set in colorful childhood, the other is growing up from it. Both are good, but movie is obviously better since, well, its movie - they simply put a lot more effort to every single scene.
Basically, any artisic intent and nuances is like throwing pearls to the swines in the face of people like you.
That's a good bait and all but you do realize the character sheets are made with no influence in lighting? Would you also think it would be wrong for her to have a green tint if she was in a room with green lights?
Holy fuck you act like the typical art student.
Guess what other KyoAni show had an upbeat, colorful TV anime and then had a different tone with the movie?
That's right.
Fuck you.
The camera pans up, retard.
>The camera pans up, retard.
What does that have to do with what I said?
...
Holy fuck you act like a typical pleb.
Good example!
He means that the comparison to the character design in the center is not a good reason to dismiss the shot's lightning or make a comparison. HOWEVER, the lightning reflection is clearly overdone, bleaching out the image.
I somewhat agree with OP. They can sometimes make the image look very washed up, this gimmick was fine in Tamako LS It gives it a very dreamy, nostalgic look, specially when the color palette in the characters was pastely, but looking at the newest Evergarden PVs some scenes just look out of place and overly washed up, it doesn't fit the character palettes.
That first reply makes it seem like you agree with him?
I don't understand what I'm supposed to be seeing here.
The blacks are completely dulled out, creating an image with very little contrast.
I didn't bother finding the clip and actually editing the levels, but I'll do it now.
And that 'fix' makes the image look overly dark. But I think what the poster you replied to was saying is that comparing the character model with a scene that has obvious lighting influences isn't really a good argument. Things look different on different lighting conditions, and in that scene there's a window to her left. I will however agree that the post effect they use is very lazy, a good example of how it should be done is in the previous webm you posted
The fact that you dont realize how you fuck up the picture is a testament that it is useless to have ani further discussion with you.
I'd rather discuss with than with you
They watched those Shinkai directed PVs.
The problem is that it's applied to the entirety of the show.
Even the BLACK title cards have their blacks dulled out.
Then we should treat it as an artistic choice, some might like it others don't. There's really no right or wrong, you can use that filter when watching it and problem solved, no?
Fuck no, only my preference is the correct one.
KyoAni's getting too carried away with the excessive amount of post-effects they use.
I nearly wanted to stop watching Koe no Katachi because of its awful use of filters.
And I'm tired of seeing good animation being put to waste to the whims of a director.
It's ALWAYS an artistic choice. Art criticism comes from what is told and how is it told in relationship to its context. No right or wrong, sure, but there's always place for understanding and polemics.
I don't see anything wrong with that shot. The only thing that was mildly annoying at first with KnK was the chromatic aberration vignetting.
Excessive contrast, clipped highlights, lost detail.
It hurts my eyes just looking at it.
What's with these threads lately? Someone has been pushing this "filters n sheit" meme hard since last week.
Did you just spouting random words here?
None of what you said apply to that pic
>Excessive contrast
Where? The darkest parts in the image aren't even completely black, like his tie or hair shadows.
>Clipped highlights
>The whitest part I could find was the shirt on the guy on the right and it's 97% white.
>Lost detail
I think that has more to do with the low quality image you just downloaded from google.
>google
I meant that it was too bright and it bothered me a lot.
Filters are shit.
Keep in mind they're on a hallway with white ceiling, it's daytime and the floor appears to be a reflective surface. Of course it will be bright.
Nu-Kyoani is the Pep Guardiola of Sup Forums.
Nothing is more delightful than to see the studio got exposed along with the raging butthurt of their fans.
I belive the core point of this thread is that specific shitposter needs to check his eyes checked with occulist asap, and stop applying his misjudged standards based on own bad sight to whole medium.
GodAni is flawless so the hate cult has to scrape for something to shitpost about.
Pep Guardiola is having a walk in the park through the supposed most difficult league in the world, though, with a team that not even 4 years ago belonged to mid table positions. He is literally proving his haters wrong.
I like the filters so fuck everyone in this thread.
>supposed most difficult league in the world
That aside, I do think both is receiving the same treatment respective of their board.
>Instagram: The Animation
>with a team that not even 4 years ago belonged to mid table positions.
Wat. 4 years ago City were winning the league. They haven't been a midtable team in 10 years.
This
>>Implying that's a bad thing.
It's a matter of taste. For some people it's bad and for some people it's good.
Stop making sense
>kyoanifag compare their studio's visual quality with Shinkai
So daring.
It's weird because Garden of Words is the only Shinkai movie that actually looks good
Indeed, nothing Shinkai did comes close to KyoAni quality
>lower normalfags reaching rate
Sasuga.
>People in this thread are defending kyoani use of FUCKING CHROMATIC ABERRATION in their works, as well with bloom and DoF
There is a reason why game developers added an option to remove those retarded post-processing effects EVEN from console games, its because looks fucking bad.
Autism.
