It was clearly an in-universe gag, not a serious announcement.
Apparently it sold well and it really gave the impression of a passion project first and foremost anyway, so I'd say a second season is pretty assured down the line, but definitely not as soon as the epiloque implied.

2017 version cuts a lot of shit out, but absolutely nothing important, and always it is unfunny/boring shit. It also just in general moves a lot faster. The first 7 episodes of the remake cover tthe same plot as the first 30 episodes of the original anime.
It's the vastly superior version.

That could mean anything from "we broke even" to "we're leaving Kemono Friends in the dust" (I expect it to be closer to the former than the latter). Whether it's considered to have sold "well" depends on the expectations of the money pushers and whether a sequel will be made will depend on whether they can be convinced that this "success" can be reproduced.
