Hunter x Hunter

I just finished the 1999 version, what should I do next? Are there major differences between the 1999 and 2011 versions? Is it safe to just start it at a certain episode or do I have to watch all of it?

I don't think I've ever seen an anime with such great art and animation quality throughout so many episodes. The whole thing is a work of art.

>Are there major differences between the 1999 and 2011 versions?
Yeah
1999>2011
watch the ova

read the manga till the elections arc, then watch 2011

>watch the ova
Will do.
Thank you. I hope to catch up with everything soon so I can properly discuss it with people. How long has it been on hiatus anyway?

>Are there major differences between the 1999 and 2011 versions?
yeah
2011>1999
also, dont watch the ova

After watching the 1st OVA series, you can start with episode 59 of the 2011 series.

Don't watch the older version of Greed Island.

also limit your time here if you are looking for HxH threads because they are majorly filled with shitposters. wait till it comes back with which is like the 3rd week of January.

If you can put up with them, then have at it

I love how it started with hunter fags shitposting in everyone else's threads until everyone returned the favor and now hxh is the most barren thread general possible

>Don't watch the older version of Greed Island.
I see that there's a "Greed Island" and "Greed Island Final" listed. It looks like they are a continuation of the other but I shouldn't watch one of them?
Good to hear it's coming back so soon. And yeah I'm used to seeing popular series shitposted about. I just hope I can get some good discussion as well since I'm a newfag to HxH.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, it is an absolutely amazing series.

That said, the 2011 version is better, but watching that now would be overload, so I recommend you cool off now and wait till the manga comes back for 10 chapters the end of Jan., and after that watch all of HxH 2011.

>hxh is the most barren thread general
Good threads, finally.

>I see that there's a "Greed Island" and "Greed Island Final" listed. It looks like they are a continuation of the other but I shouldn't watch one of them?
You shouldn't watch either. The remake covers that arc better.

Not really, it rushes through at light speed. The manga's the way to go.

Why does 99 look stso bad?

...

...

...

What? The OVA is garbage and nowhere near the quality of 99. OP should just switch to 2011 knowing that it won't be as good as 99 but is still much better than the OVA. Or just read the manga because it's the best version of the series.

The major difference between 1999 and 2011 is that 1999 does everything better, but 2011 has the Chimera Ants arc.

1999 looks worse on the last shot tbqh

But everything else is quite superior.

Watch the three OVA's, and continue with the manga. Greed Island '99 is not as bad as people make it out to be.

Okay let me be real with you here. There's no wrong or right answer of which is better. 1999 takes artistic liberties which the 2011 version wouldn't dream of taking. But the 2011 version is the more loyal adaptation of Togashi's manga. Both are pretty fantastic.

1999 TV series is great, OVA 1 (the conclusion to the York New city arc) is great. The last 2 OVAs are horrifically bad. All artistic value and charm present in the TV series is gone and it looks bright, clunky and terrible.

I would say watch the 2011 version from the start but I understand it's not as easy as that, so just watch from the Greed Island arc. You could even get away with watching the York New city arc to compare. The Heavens arena arc in the 2011 version is also better in parts too.

It's worse, people generally forget to even mention how bad it is and think of it as part of 99. It's hideous and devoid of any artistic value, so you may as well watch 2011. At least it's polished looking.

2011 skips too much for me to give it a chance. Plus, I like the way they characterized Biscuit in '99. Maybe it's because GI was fairly lighthearted in the manga that the upbeat look in the OVA's didn't bother me.

What does 2011 skip though?? Yeah it skipped Kite in the beginning and changed a few parts here and there for dumb reasons, but it ends up finding its feet by the time it gets to Greed Island?

2011 rushes through Greed Island, and some parts of other arcs. CA is where you notice things slowing down at the Palace Invasion. Again, my reason for suggesting to watch GI '99 was that the manga was lighthearted and the OVA fits the tone. Now, if CA looked the same had it gotten to that point, the complaints would be valid.

wasn't the manga supposed to return before the end of the year?

Togashi you fucking lazy hack

Greed Island's OVAs are hideous QUALITY fests where the character models have the consistency of silly putty.

Second Greed Island OVA fixed that, though I like Biscuit's look in the first one, it fit the porcelain doll motif she sports better.

I swear to fucking god I want to kill anybody who recommends the 1999 version, especially if they do it for the animation.

2011 has better voice actors, a better soundtrack, much better pacing and direction, better animation, and is superior in almost every respect. 2011's art style is much closer to the manga, and the handful of cool looking shots with a dark, urban aesthetic don't make for everything 2011 has going for it. 1999 also censors some stuff, like the Uvogin Shadow Beast fight, which is affectingly shocking in 2011 and completely unremarkable in 1999.

Fuck you nostalgic hipster faggots. You retards have made dozens of people watch an almost inarguably worse version so you can posture as elitists.

watch all of '99. follow up with the ovas. start 2011 from 76 until 148. read the manga from the beginning.

wew 2011fag calm down.

>people actally recommending greed island ova's
I guess that's what months of hiatus does to the brain.

>2011 has better voice actors
wrong
>a better soundtrack
wrong
>much better pacing and direction
wrong
>better animation
wrong
>superior in almost every respect
wrong
>2011's art style is much closer to the manga
wrong
>1999 also censors some stuff
2011 censors more things

I watched each. Comparisons like and are egregious cherry picking, and 1999 generally has mediocre animation. 1999 improves a few scenes here and there, but 2011 is overall much better. Compare Hisoka's 2011 and 1999 voice actors for goodness' sake.

This is not a constructive conversation, but there are maybe two minutes of great animation in the 1999 version, and it's disgusting to see faggots posting it as evidence that 1999's animation is far superior.

1999's animation is straight up bad for the most part.

Looks like its one of "those" threads. Can't wait for the hiatus to be over.

I didn't watch the first anime, but having read the manga I can tell the second anime 100% lives up to it. I don't think I'd recommend any other anime more than I would the 2011 version, user. The movies are so fucking shitty though, almost Naruto-tier quality

The point of comparison for those screenshots I posted aren't to point out the animation quality difference, but rather just the different art direction.
The new version mostly has better animation, but the art direction in the old series has always been infinitely better in my eyes, and the scene direction too seems a step ahead of the 2011 version.

All in all, I personally value the art style, and directing of a show over consistently good animation.

You made Hisoka cry with that edge

chileno culiao teniai que ser jajaja

Greed Island Final is one of the worst animated OPs I've seen

youtube.com/watch?v=pLGhqvAdQrs

They do fix it after a bit though.

1999 has neat art direction and throws in a few cool stills that weren't in the manga, but it's far behind 2011 in OST, animation, and especially voice acting. I also legitimately disagree about the scene direction, although it's hard to say if I found 2011 more tense because of its pacing or its music.

In any case fuck yourself. Nobody should watch 1999 first and move on to the broader series, it makes noncanonical changes (like with Gon's dad) that fuck with characterization and the story in the long run.

>Compare Hisoka's 2011 and 1999 voice actors for goodness' sake.
One has a high, yet creepy voice. The other is overly smarmy and lacks any subtlety the '99 voice actor has. On that note, '99 understands that Hisoka changes his colors every recurring appearance vs. that awful pale goblin 2011 consistently showcased.

not pictured: Animation
the 90s version suffers from the same problem that most 90s anime does: a bunch of panning still shots to save money on animation especially during action scenes

>In any case fuck yourself. Nobody should watch 1999 first and move on to the broader series, it makes noncanonical changes (like with Gon's dad) that fuck with characterization and the story in the long run.
Not like it makes a damn difference, someone could stop at the end of the Yorknew City arc for the 1999 version and still have the same experience as someone stopping at whereever the fuck the manga currently is because it's never gonna end.

You are still cherry picking about art direction by using the memorable scenes from epsidoe when most scenes in the show look like a pokemon episode. and 2011 also had its nice moments of directing

moreover it's been more than 10 fucking years. its obvious that the quality of the animation would've better for a lot of factors. the art style and direction on '99 is far superior for its time. now talking about ost and voice acting is a whole different animal but it also has a lot to do with how was the industry then and how it is now. same with hxh as franchise

See
That's a scene where only the 2011 version is trying to do anything special, but honestly I still prefer 1999 version on the whole.
It's not just cherry picking, it's more ambitious with its visual direction than the 2011 version. I also have a bias towards cel animation.

>Animation

...

Unforgivably bad taste. 99 Hisoka just sounds like a chain smoking faggot. 2011 Hisoka's voice is blatantly sexual in an extremely creepy way, and it puts you on edge.

Ging abandoning his son to adventure full time is already important to his character at this point in the manga's release.

At three webms and you're already posting bad animation.

>2011 can't count
Sounds about right.

*2011fag
An innocent typo happens, unlike being borderline retarded.

I was including , which 99fags normally post

you realize half of his webm is literally still images with a shaky camera effect right?

We post this gif, not that webm. That webm though only showcases how many shortcuts they take with the animation.

And does that as well, but it's okay when 2011 does it.

This webm proves his point, yes that episode has like 3 nice pieces of animation that last in total about a minute. the rest of the actual episode is just talking heads and reacting faces with camera pans. and no, they aren't particularity impressive art direction camera pans

Just like 2011, but it's okay when 2011 does it because it's more 'faithful'. Leave it to you 2011fags to miss what direction and perspective is.

...

Please post more webms if you have them. It can be anything, not just fights. Like this scene.

I'd also like to add that as someone who really loves YYH I think HxH might be the better series. It's like it took everything good about YYH and amplified it. The characters feel more fleshed out and have better chemistry with each other and there's more world building.

...

so they're cock enthusiasts, right?

I got this, but that's it.

2011 looks better than 99

You're more than welcome to post an example.

...

Thank you, user.

>but it's okay when 2011 does it.

see, here is where your underlying problem lies. you seem to think "2011fags" hold the show in a pedestal like some console warrior, like you do with the 99 show. The reality of the matter is that people who don't have this strange hard on for the show, out of nostalgia or what ever other bias reason, can look at both shows and determine that the 2011 show is overall better animated. and that the average scene from the 99 show looks like not this amazing art house anime

I mean really, you are resorting to criticizing people for recommending the 2011 show over the 99 because its more faithful. like what the fuck dude.

...

1999 straight up ruined things, like Uvogin dying after being incapacitated by chain jail. In 2011 it was correctly portrayed as loyal and courageous, while in 1999 the scene was shunted off into sixty seconds of the episode and the voice actor delivered his lines like it was cowardly. Shit like that is the most unforgivable thing about 1999.

why is this female woman covering her vagina if she has pants on anyway?

What's the point of this one? The image training dialogue was in the OVA too.

The second opening of 1999 is the GOAT !!!!
Also it has a filler with Killua watching porn... so

Do we know what culture everyone's from or based on? I know that a couple of characters mentioned they were from Japan.

OP, do yourself a favor and read the manga version of Greed Island. This shit is filled with so many cards explanation that won't be covered in both versions of the anime. The lack of these card descriptions is pretty much the main reason anime casuals thought GI was boring/meandering, when they have no fucking clue about the players strategies and line of thought. Now, you might as well read the Chimera Ant arc, since the 2011 adaptation ruined its pace, and frankly the narration suits the manga literary form better than the anime. Also Togashi's paneling and more expressive art is something you shouldn't trade off.

Don't mention it.
You'd think the shotafags would like '99 for scenes like that one and this.

Actually, I'm criticizing the people who say '99 is awful by all merits and whose critiques have been debunked countless times. I started with 2011. 1999 has a better director and better direction. 1:1 adaptions do NOT work. It's why Classic Sailor Moon is still beloved yet Crystal left a sour taste in everyone's mouths, even with S3 improving on it. Good direction trumps any form of 'accuracy'.

The whole point of '99's direction was that Uvogin was being overpowered by someone who he perceived as weaker. His will and ambition were solid enough to make him shake. Yeah, it wasn't in the manga, blah blah. I already told you taking creative liberties can lead to good or bad decisions and I felt that was a good way to showcase Kurapika's PTSD and realization of him taking a life and also Uvogin's underestimation of him.

True..
Gon vs Genthru still the best fight in the manga.

No. Neither has had a friend before. Killua treasures Gon because Gon has an amorality that comes to the brink of innocence, meaning Gon will accept Killua despite Killua being an assassin. Gon, meanwhile, is just extremely loyal and headstrong, and will do a lot for any of his friends, especially his best one. Their relationship is less interesting if they're gay.

Killua = white
Gon = black
Leorio = jew
Kurapika = canadian
Hisoka = clown
Chrolo = brazilian

...

Have to say that the soundtrack, animation, and voice actors are way better in 2011. It's because it's a newer series, doesn't mean that 99 is bad by any means. A newer anime with a higher production quality will pretty much always have better everything.

I've tried watching the 1999 and 2011 series multiple times. Every time I get bored after watching 5-6 episodes and quit. Is this series just not for me, or do I have to power through more episodes to get going?

This show tries really hard to make me a shotafag.
I'm exclusively a Killuafag and Gonfag. They're special.

>I already told you taking creative liberties can lead to good or bad decisions and I felt that was a good way to showcase Kurapika's PTSD and realization of him taking a life and also Uvogin's underestimation of him.
It was flat out worse. "Oh no, this weakling beat me" totally overlooks the most interesting and emotionally powerful part of that scene in the manga. Part of the reason Kurapika had trouble killing Uvogin was that Uvogin clearly cared for his comrades, and that humanized him. It made a great scene forgettable, and 1999 Uvogin isn't nearly as likable a character as his counterpart in 2011 or in the manga.

1:1 adaptation has nothing to do with it. 1999 adds in a lot of nice, little thing, but it fucks up big things.

>adaption fags back at it again

Not gonna lie, I missed you fucks

More like
Gon = Chinese
Killua = European
Leorio = Jew
Kurapika = Native American
Hisoka = faggot
Chrollo = Italian

166102963
It's slow at first. Pick 2011 and resolve to get through 13 episodes. By then it should be getting hard to stop watching.

Killua's indefinitely half a Slav

*definitely

You should read the manga.

>series known as hiatusxhiatus
Just stop reading/watching until it's actually completed. This and Berserk are the two mangas where everyone loves the material, but fucking hates the author for being a lazy piece of shit and not finishing their work.
>inb4 cocksuckers of the authors start their suckling

And you also realize it goes both ways. Kurapika cares about his friends, but sees them as liabilities. Uvogin kills and is a murderer/etc. but cares for his comrades. Both are equally in the same basket. It's a matter of who you think is more 'noble' and 'human'. Granted, Kurapika could be seen as a hero but with his pursuit of the scarlet eyes, he was bound to get into trouble, killing Uvogin and Pakunoda as the first stepping stone.

>Part of the reason Kurapika had trouble killing Uvogin was that Uvogin clearly cared for his comrades, and that humanized him

Not him but I can't recall this ever being the case in 2011, much less the actual manga. Uvo was pretty 1:1 adapted all verisons.

I had already put off watching it for years not because of the hiatus but because I wasn't sure I wanted to try and get into a long running series. I'm glad I watched it, even if it means waiting forever for it to finish.

This Honestly

The series doesn't really pick up until you get to the 3rd arc. At first it seems like a typical shonen but trust me some of the later episodes in the 2011 version will make the wait worth it

Kurapika's primary character development throughout the arc was to stop seeing his comrades as liabilities, and to value them more than revenge.

You have poor reading comprehension or you have trouble understanding people
