I don't remember the TV series being very good to be honest. Even in terms of visuals, despite coming out years earlier the OVAs look much better.

OVAs tend to have higher budgets and longer deadlines. So it's easier for them to have much higher quality art and (usually) animation.
TV budgets and time constraints always kill quality, especially a series like Lodoss, which was known for having such detailed art.
I really didn't like the TV series at all. But I did enjoy the omake shorts at the end of each episode. dubbed
