I have a theory that the reason a lot of the newer generation don't seem to get Haruhi is related to the way anime's fanbase and "nerd culture" in general has shifted into the mainstream over the past decade. At the time failed normies were still everywhere, so people were much more able to related to Kyon's pain. Good point, Kyon's role and circumstances were good for someone like him. Even if he put up a straight man/normal shtick, it serves a fulfilling purpose.
The extraordinary life wasn't all sunshine and rainbows but even with all the bad stuff, he still judged it to be more worthwhile than an ordinary one. An ordinary life isn't bad, it could be very enjoyable, but Kyon couldn't choose what he deep down in his heart believed to be an inferior life. He didn't want to settle, he never wanted to settle. He's not truly a passive lethargic pushover with no influence over anything, doomed to be an extra; anyone should know this when he was ready to deck Haruhi when she went turbocunt.
