You dont have to do anything but I would recomment at least watching the OVAs, ghibli staff worked on it, so it has quite the magic to it. Other than that you should also read Neo Devilman a lot of famous mangaka paid homage to Devilman in that one. Some interesting short stories within the Devilman universe get told in there.
Devilman Lady manga and anime, which are different, is also an option. You can also read Violence Jack which like Devilman Lady is a sequel or continuation of Devilman.

Devilman is a tragic gay love story nothing edgy about it.

Oh and I mean reading or watching it. I watched the first OVA and fell asleep halfway through. It's just not something memorable besides it influencing the many authors which came afterwards.

The manga is pretty damn good and the setting and story are the kind that adapts well to anime. Could well be AOTY if they don't fuck things up.

The OVA influenced no one. The original manga from 1973 was the influential one. The original anime was groundbreaking too though not for the same reason. It opened up a window for more violent cartoons to appear on TV.

Violet Evergarden is melodrama for women.

It'll probably be about four moeblob high school girls that eat cake and drink tea that get isekai'd to another world where they have to use the power of friendship to overcome obstacles.
Along the way there are some subtle yuri references, and on the last episode, the original devilman is referenced once in a conversation between two unrelated cast members.

Yeah. I'm hyped for certain aspects of Franxx, VEG, and Fate/Extra due to the staff working on them and things I've heard about them, but also dreading other aspects for the same reasons. Whereas I just expect Devilman to be actually good.

Well, there are pretty consistent Devilman and Nagai threads on here anyway. Devilman isn't a seasonal show that's only really discussed while it airs. I'm sure Crybaby will be discussed sporadically for years to come.

Devilman Grimoire wasn't scanlated beyond chapter 3. You'll have to get the official release.

Devilman Saga hasn't been scanlated beyond volume 1. The group working on it had issues finding raws and are working through Go Nagai's other works while they wait. They mentioned they finally found raws for volumes 2-6 last week but they were subpar.

Seventh Sea did a fairly sloppy job as all the pages are tilted, as if the could fit them on the scanner properly and they slop down from the gutter. Obscuring the bottom outer edge and inner tops.
