It is unusual for manga that are almost entirely depressing to not have a happily ever after ending, even if it's basically only a page long.

For me the contrast between the main characters, and their environment is enough to replace a "happy ending". Like everything is fucked, and they know it, they go through tbe motions of just trying to survive, but it's okay as long as they are together.

is it bait or smth? this was one of the better endings they could come up with desu and it really kept up with the overall vibe of the show. They werent supossed to kill all life but to reforge unstable matter into something more stable, easily degradable. They prolly were some cleaning living things created by humans to over time cleanse the world of the things they left behind. Maybe humans are hiding underground waiting for the world to be cleansed? Maybe they bailed from earth and found a new planet to live or are still living in the higher levels? The show leaves many questions behind that are supossed to be left not answered so that the world is mysterious and interesting. IMO there are a few things that could be better but overall i really liked this anime as some chill, mysterious, inetersting and silly story that really made me think about stuff
